The other demon is older, and a sense of exhaustion hovers around him.
My demon has not reacted. Surely, they must know one another?
Then the older demon speaks.
“Why are you messing around with humans? Stop this and get back to work!” The older demon says, his voice turning into a shriek.
“Yes, I’m sorry.” my demon says. As the other demon lifts into the sky, my demon’s red eyes flash.
“Can I keep her?”
“If it doesn’t interfere with your work, then by all means, keep the plaything!”
The older demon shrieks before vanishing.
“What do you mean can you keep me?” The words burst from me, hot and angry.
For a second, I have forgotten the demon’s size and power relative to mine.
He doesn’t answer me, and I roll my eyes. I stand up, brushing desert dust off my body.
When I peer out at the horizon, I almost think I see Camp Shadows. The encampment seems so small from where I’m standing.
Small flickers of red and gold light tell me that they have started their nightly fires.
Has anyone even noticed that I’m missing? Surely my parents would have noticed part of the roof missing from our home?
What does it matter if the demon is kidnapping me?The frustrated voice in my head asks.
What can you do at Camp Shadows? Nothing.
Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
The words cold and lonely repeat themselves in my head over and over again.
As I look at the demon, I realize how alone I am. I’m alone in the world.
And I do not even have the stupid book that got me into this mess in the first place.
But even though I have nothing to lose, the thought of being the demon’s plaything does terrify me.
What does he plan to do with me? How does he plan to use me?
Embarrassed heat spreads throughout my body. And maybe the demon can smell the heat spilling from my pores.
It turns to look at me with narrowed eyes.
“What are you going to do to me?” When they escape me, the words are small and filled with hot terror.

The human girl is absurdly pretty.
I noticed it the moment I saw her in that human settlement. The settlement is called Camp Shadows.
It’s an idiotic name.
