“Ysenia had heard rumors that the idiot had cheated on her. She was hurt but not devastated by it,” Mr. Copeland says, taking a bite of his bacon.

“She was pretty hurt yesterday,” I whisper, remembering the pain in her eyes when she learned it was Kevin that Jenna was marrying.

“She is hurt by Jenna, not Kevin,” Mrs. Copeland explains. “Jenna could have had any man on the planet but she chose Kevin. Ysenia considered Jenna family. That’s why Ysenia is devastated.”

“So Kevin isn’t…” I’m not even sure the question I’m trying to ask.

“You ever eat at a different restaurant because your favorite restaurant is closed?” Mr. Copeland asks, making Mrs. Copeland and myself stare at him as though he’s lost his mind.

“Javier, what does that have to do with the tea in China?” she asks.

I was thinking something similar but I wouldn’t dare say it to Ysenia’s dad. Not in a million years.

“He’s upset thinking Ysenia still has feelings for that idiot. I’m trying to explain that Kevin never would have existed if Miguel had been anywhere near the picture.” Mr. Copeland’s words are smooth as butter and make all my doubt wash away.

“I thought you were going to give him a stern talking to because of his immaturity last night,” Mrs. Copeland smirks.

“I was going to but he’s being punished enough by Ysenia not being here.” Mr. Copeland nods at his own words.

“Ah. So she is mad at me,” I sigh.

“Well, you texted her several time saying to please pick you up but then she gets there and you are drunk as a skunk and want her to go inside the house to drink with you and your step-father,” Mrs. Copeland shakes her head disapprovingly.

“Did I really refuse?”

“Mijo,” Mr. Copeland sets down his fork and takes a deep breath. “You tried getting me to stay there and drink with you. Getting you out of that house was an absolute pain. You were so adamant to leave but didn’t budge.

“I am so sorry,” I lower my head. It’s all I can do at this point, besides the walk of shame, which will come later on.

“Then when I convinced you to come outside, you tried kidnapping your step-dad. Said you needed to liberate him from the evil dictator,” Mr. Copeland says, trying to keep a straight face.

“Ugh. What’d he do?” I groan.

“He hopped on your back and yelledfreedom,” Mr. Copeland busts out laughing. Mrs. Copeland tries to be polite and hold back her laughter, but soon she joins her husband.

The thought of Hank on my back and us trying to escape the house plays out in my mind. Who the hell could keep a straight face at that image? Not me.

“My mother probably lost her mind,” I laugh.

“She was so mad at you both. Kept threatening to have you committed to an asylum,” he laughs harder.

“I wish I could have seen Marcia’s face!” Mrs. Copeland blurts. Tears are starting to form in all of our eyes from laughing so hard. It’s been a long time since I laughed this much. A refreshing, much-needed feeling.

We laughed for what seemed like eternity but silence finally fell over us.

“Now down to business,” Mrs. Copeland claps her hands together. “Let’s help get you the girl.”

Chapter Eighteen

Ysenia

“Why are you even here if you just going to be poutin’ the whole time?” Hayva asks, standing in the doorway of my office. “I thought you decided to go home and tell that man how you feel?”

“It really won’t make a difference. He’ll be heading to Italy after his sister’s wedding,” I sigh.

“That triflin’ she-devil!” Hayva pretends to spit on the floor. “To hell with that woman.”

“Focus, Hayva. Focus,” I giggle. “We are talking about Miguel going back to Italy.”
