“He might stay if you ask him.”

“His entire life is over there now. Hell, he doesn’t even like coming to Texas, when he does come to the states every few months. I live in Texas. So even if he did accept my feelings, it wouldn’t change anything.”

Hayva stares at me long and hard. It is a disapproving, motherly look. I’m in for one heck of a lecture. I can sense it.

“Ysenia Copeland, why you giving excuses? You have gotten this far in life with hard work so why you going to stop working hard for things now?” She crosses her arms in front of her chest. Her eyes are narrowed in on me. She isn’t done chewing me up. “You don’t think I can handle things here while you go off to see him in Italy?”

“Hayva, I never said that.”

“Then what be the problem then?”

I close my laptop and lean back in my chair. Hayva is one of my closest friends. I can tell her anything but right now nerves are flooding me.

“Well, spit it out,” she sasses, making me giggle.

“Let’s pretend that we both lived in the same place. There is still another issue.”

“Which be?”

“Jenna. She’s still his sister. He might feel like he would have to choose between us. That isn’t fair to him.”

“You just be coming up with all kinds of excuses now.” Hayva rolls her eyes and shakes her head. “What is going on between you and that sister of his has nothing to do with you and him. So, you need to stop with all that noise and go after the man you love.”

My eyes widen and I swallow hard. Did she just toss the four-letter word out on the table? I never once used that word. That’s the scariest word on the planet.

“I didn’t say that, Hayva,” I say softly.

“Didn’t mean to say it. I could see it in your eyes whenever you speak about the boy. You’re a love-sick pup.”

“How do you know that phrase but didn’t know what a derby driver was?” I tease.

“You keep giving me a fuss and I’m not going to help you get your man,” she warns.

“How the hell are you going to help me getmyman anyway?” I ask with my eyebrow raised. Amusement coating my words.

“I’m here for moral support. I am going to give you the confidence to go after him.”

“I have… confidence.” The faint word betrays the message I’m trying to get across.

“Convincing, Boss Lady. Real convincing,” Hayva grins. “You need to go get him before he gets on a plane and you never see him again, crazy woman.”

I take several slow, deep breaths. My heart is racing so fast that I feel like it is going to explode. My hands are shaking from nerves and the world feels like it’s caving in. Hayva’s face shifts from upset mother to concerned mother. She crosses the room in a hurry. She stands beside me and rubs my back gently.

“It’s going to be okay, Ysenia. I promise. Everything will be okay.” She pats my back softly. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“What if I confess to everything and he walks away?” My voice trembles as I speak and I can feel the tears building in my eyes.

“Then it will be his loss.” She leans down and wraps her arms around me. She kisses the side of my head. “You won’t know if you don’t try.”

“I’m freaking scared,” I admit in a rushed breath. “Every time he’s around my emotions are all over the place. Shy one second. A sex-driven slut puppy the next. I’m all over the place.”

“That is to be expected when you really like someone. They drive you crazy.”

“And then leave you to go back to Italy,” I sob.

“Enough of that.” She swats my arm. “Time to put on your big girl panties.”

I look up at her and smile.
