“Well, he won’t get his hands on me, so it won’t be an issue.” She inched to her right, the vampire following her.

To the left from her peripheral, the down and dirty fight between Ash and the female vampire raged on, and Tamaska didn’t dare lift her gaze from the vampire talking to her. She didn’t trust it, didn’t know if she could actually fight it.

So even though she’d try, she had to concentrate, trust Ash would win and that she, herself, could inflict some damage on this thing.

It wasn’t going to kill her.

Oh, hell. She should have realized that earlier. So, she had that power. It wanted to take her to Amdis. As long as she stopped it from taking her, she’d be fine.

She hoped.

The vampire laughed once more. “He will. He always gets what he wants.”

“You’ll die trying,” said Tamaska, stepping to the side, hoping to get closer to the door and the chance to flee.

If she managed to run, then hopefully both vampires would come after her and Ash would be okay.

“Then another vampire will take my place and come for you.” The vampire stepped closer. “Then another, and another, until Amdis has you.”

Tamaska’s blood chilled. “Why?”

“You’ll find out.” The vampire attacked, lashing out with alternating swipes as it tried to get ahold of her.

“Not today.” Tamaska leaned backwards, avoiding the vampire’s outstretched hands. She blocked the next punch, leaving the vampire open, then snap-kicked his belly hard and fast.

The vampire doubled over, struggling to maintain his balance. Tamaska stepped backwards, putting as much distance as she could between herself and her attacker. It wouldn’t be enough.

The door was on the other side of the damned vampire.

Fresh blood from her wound dripped down her arm. Each movement seemed harder, her limbs heavier, slower.

Get it together, she told herself.

Ash continued fighting, though Tamaska was sure it was a second vampire as something was slumped in the corner. She didn’t dare look closer.

Her attacker had recovered enough and came for her again. His words, that there would always be more vampires after her, sent terror streaking through Tamaska.

How could she defend against a relentless attack?

Ash whimpered as the vampire struck her hard. The glint of a knife caught Tamaska’s eye.

Could she live with herself if someone died for her?

A hiss to her left snapped her focus into place once more. The vampire closed in on her again.

“You should think about their lives. Though there are too many dogs around here. What’s a few less? Especially when you hate them as much as we do.”

“That’s not true.”

“But it is.”

How the hell would it know about her phobia?

The vampire didn’t give her a chance to respond. He rushed forward, pushing her hard and knocking her to the ground before she had a chance to defend herself.

Before she could even think about getting up, the vampire was on her chest, pushing her onto the floor.

“Ready to come with me now?”
