But she went for it again, right as Ash’s wolf landed in front of her, snapping and snarling, revealing fangs and claws like daggers.

The vampire reared back, then came at Ash.

Heart in her mouth, she pushed back against the wall, unable to help. Tamaska could do nothing but watch.

Each snap from the vampire was a bolt of electricity burning her. Each snarl from Ash a thing filled with dark hope.

Suddenly Ash moved fast, jumping into the air and coming down on the vampire, trying to bite into the vampire’s neck.

But the creature tossed the wolf off her, and Ash landed hard on the stone floor, a whine of pain filling the air.

The vampire laughed and Tamaska went for it, only to be pushed back by Ash who was on her hind legs as she went in for the offensive.

The creature was strong and fast, making it difficult for Ash’s wolf to gain the upper hand.

But Ash wasn’t about to give up.

Tamaska wasn’t about to give up. She’d die before she did that.

Not on her watch.

She took her kata readying to defend.

“Really? You’re going to fight me with your puny human fists?”

She whirled.

Another one. He stepped into the room and glanced dismissively at Ash and the other fanged menace fighting. Then he looked at her.

The vampire laughed. “Didn’t realize you were such an easy target.”

Tamaska remained quiet, her jaw clenched tight. Instead, she readied to punch, even as the pain in her arm nearly took her breath away.

“They should’ve sent me to find you the first time.” The vampire’s eyes looked like black gems, an unnatural sight.

“What do you want with me?” asked Tamaska, forcing out the words as her mouth dried. As she tried to buy time.

“Me?” The mockery in his voice made her anger twist and flare a bright light. “Nothing, though I would enjoy having a taste of your blood.”

“Fuck off.”

Her response made the vampire chuckle. “Oh, come on now, you might like it. A lot of humans do, you know. They come, begging us to sink our fangs into their flesh and drink.”

Bile rose and she shivered in disgust. “Repulsive. That’s what it is. Letting one of youthingsdrink my blood. Who would want that?”

“Who’d want to mate with a vile dog?”

A handful of days ago she might have agreed. “These shifters are noble. And they don’t do disgusting things like rip open veins to drink blood.”

“It’s not what you think. It’s more euphoric than anything else,” said the vampire, who was almost within arm’s reach.

Tamaska got ready to strike, no matter how badly the pain lanced through her.

“Some even say it’s better than sex.” The vampire raised an eyebrow suggestively. “I’ll go easy on you.”

“Like hell, I’d let you.”

“At least with me, you’d have a choice. When Amdis gets his hands on you, you won’t even have that.”
