“Fuck off.” She tried to push the vampire away, but her wound had weakened her too much.

“Hmmmm….” The vampire inhaled near her wound, breathing in the scent of fresh blood.

He licked a trail of blood from her skin. The vampire’s eyes rolled back, lashes fluttering as he swallowed. Then he ran his tongue over his lips.

Tamaska’s stomach lurched. She swallowed hard to stop herself from retching. “Fuck. Get off.”

She pushed hard but couldn’t get the vampire to move.

“Just one more taste. Now I know why Amdis wants you for himself.”

“Why? What makes me different from any other human?” She glared, trying to gather her strength for a renewed attack. “Why me?”

“You blood is different, perfect for the experiment.” The vampire’s voice sounded distant, as if he were in a drug-induced haze.

“What experiment?” she asked, trying to keep the dark, needful excitement for answers from her voice.

“With the Blood Opal.” The vampire flicked his tongue, leaning forward to taste more.

She struggled, trying to push the beast away when suddenly it went flying.

Ochre fur bristled as a giant wolf nudged her, standing over her.

She wanted to cry out in joy.

Kodiak—she recognized the wolf.

He turned and looked at her, and she could see him in there.

“I’m okay. They want me alive.”

The vampire came at Kodiak. He growled and attacked.

Her heart rose into her throat, and she blinked back hot tears as all around her carnage ensued.

Another wolf limped into the room. There was something about it that reminded her of Olcan. And her heart squeezed at the wounds on it, the thick, oozing blood, and the sheen in his eyes.

Life-threatening wounds and all because of her.

She wanted to be sick.

Tamaska tried to rush to help, but Kodiak nudged her, pushing her into the wall before he resumed his fight.

Another wolf—Ash—let out a high-pitched whine, making her heart hurt all over again.

It was too much. Bodies and growls and fur and teeth. And she couldn’t do a thing.

Except distract, and that was the last thing she wanted. So she stayed where she was, readying to defend herself, to step in if she could, as the shifters and vampires raged their bloody, deadly war. Because of her.

The injured wolf swayed, then flew into action, rushing to Ash’s aid. Tamaska couldn’t believe how the wolves were protecting her, attacking the vampires even after they’d been injured. With support of the other wolf, Ash finally gained the upper hand.

To her left, Kodiak fought the other vampire. She was relieved to see him fighting strong. The other two wolves joined him, even though he didn’t need help. They danced around the vampire, working together to bring the monster down, right as two more vampires raced in.

Kodiak stood tall and strong, Ash wobbly, but growling, and ready for the fight. And the other one, who she thought might be Olcan, hung back and broke her heart.

The wolf’s fur was damp, matted around the deep wounds, and his eyes were fever bright, full of struggle as if he couldn’t decide what to do.

The sight pained her. She wished she could fight for them.
