No vampires were in sight.

He inhaled, using his wolf senses to help him smell, to see if there was a difference between fresh vamp and old, but the walls were too full of the vampires’ deathly scent. He couldn’t discern if any lurked deep within the shadows. The old and new scents were too entwined, just like he’d thought.

He waited another beat.

Still nothing.

Kodiak kept coming back to the fact that he hadn’t seen anyone, inside or out. It unnerved him, like they were watching, waiting, had set some kind of trap. His wolf pushed hard to get out.

Not yet.He steadied his control over both his human and wolf forms. And he slowly unfurled his wolf a little, allowing it to ready in case action was needed, as he continued to plot his path.

If it was a trap then he was in it, well and truly. He couldn’t do much about it, except let his wolf keep watch, and for his human side to curb its curiosity.

Instead of giving into the opportunity to explore and find the opal or to stay where he was, he had to stick to his mission: find Tamaska.

Once he did that, he’d get the fuck out. And the places where the vamps might keep the opal he filed away, as he did the floor plan. When it came down to a fight, they might be able to use what he now knew about this forsaken place.

And staying? If they knew he was here, staying pressed against the wall was going to do shit. He needed to move.

Kodiak shoved away from the wall. Tamaska’s scent, much stronger now, coiled inside him, warming him and setting his blood burning. The taste of her skin, the heat of her. The wetness. The spike of desire within him flared bright.

He automatically turned his head toward the curtained-off spaces. His first time with her had been fast and hot and unexpected. They’d unintentionally sealed their bond then.

What was it about her that made him form a mating connection like that, without even meaning to? She was human, after all, and the pack had vowed to keep their bloodline pure. They couldn’t mix with humans. Yet, he’d bonded with one, or at least started the process to the point where he was considering risking his position in the pack for her.

If it was just protection, that would be one thing, but his need to keep her safe ran deeper, darker than that.

Of course, there was her fear of dogs. What a sick joke. Two people like them would never have chosen to be together. And together was all levels of stupid. He wanted her. Wanted to claim. To bond. But beyond that?

The smartest thing would be to keep away from Tamaska, as his alpha had instructed.

A sharp scream rose from the basement, shattering his thoughts. He rushed down the stairs in that direction.

He knew that sound, and it resonated through him, deep in his sinew.

Kodiak ran hard.

Something slammed into him. He stumbled back, using all his muscles to stay upright. His arms came around the warm, soft flesh.

And her sweet scent cut through the stench, wrapping him up like the most refreshing, enticing breath of air. She screamed again and fought him.

“Tamaska, it’s me.”

But she still struggled as he tightened his grip.

“It’s Kodiak.”

For a second he thought she’d lash out, scream at him, but instead she started to shake, falling in on him.

She clutched at him and raised her head, eyes wide and fraught with fear. “Oh, God. I thought—I thought you were one of them!”

“C’mon, we need to get out of here.”

“No.” This time she pulled back, gaze hardening. “Cory is…he’s here, he’s one of them…and the opal—”

“Fuck the opal right now. If there’s one, there’s more.” He tugged her back along where he’d come, unfurling his wolf a little more to expand his senses.

He’d met Cory at the event where the Blood Opal was stolen. His pack had thought Cory might be aligned with the vampires, and they’d been right.
