He wanted to rip the bastard’s throat out. He needed to find the opal. He had to get her to safety.

The last one was the most important.

“Go.” Kodiak pushed her up the stairs.

He went to follow her when something heavy dropped onto his back. Something sharp dug into his skin. Pain lanced through him. A deeper, darker pain than from a usual attack, but he knew that pain.

Vampire.

“Run, Tamaska.” Kodiak spun and slammed his back into the wall.

He did it again, smashing the vampire against the hard surface.

It loosened his grip enough so Kodiak could reach up, grab it by the back of its shirt, and pulled the vampire overhead. The force sent it rolling down the concrete stairs.

He raced down the steps after it, determined to end its unlife now.

Kodiak didn’t dare look back, didn’t let himself think about Tamaska. Not when he had to end the immediate threat.

He was better than a damn bloodsucker, but they could be wily, and he wanted to make sure he got her out in one piece.

Fuck. It was the guy she worked with. New yes, but new often came with the power of arrogance. And that could make him unpredictable.

“If you want to live,” he said, having no intentions of letting that happen, “you’ll let her go free. Your fight isn’t with a human, vampire.”

“Ah, the wolf is here,” said Cory as he picked himself up from the concrete floor, wiping blood from the split in his lip. “My fight is with you both. I want her, and you, pathetic dog, won’t be able to keep her safe.”

“So you don’t want to live?” Kodiak spat at the vampire’s feet. “Very well. I can kill you now, your choice.”

He didn’t give the vampire a chance to respond.

Kodiak swung fast, a hard uppercut, and his fist connected with the side of the vampire’s face in a loud thud, sending Cory staggering backwards.

Not wanting to lose his advantage, Kodiak followed up with a series of kicks, aimed to do maximum damage.

The vampire fought back, but not hard enough and the bloodlust of the fight started to come over him. His wolf rose up, urging the transformation, wanting to let loose and destroy.

But he held back.

If Tamaska hadn’t run like he’d commanded, he didn’t want to scare her by changing forms again. She couldn’t cope the first time, and now she was fleeing from a vampire. One she’d known as human.

It was a wonder she wasn’t on the first plane out of the country. The world as she knew it would never be the same again. He had a lot to explain to her when they got out of there.

Kodiak picked Cory up in an angry rage and threw him hard onto the altar, enjoying the yell of pain that echoed through the room. He needed to finish Cory off, and his wolf side begged to participate.

Settle. Not this time.Kodiak bent to drag Cory by the ankles closer. He put his foot on the vampire’s neck and leaned in, raising his fist.

A scream behind him rent the air.

Kodiak spun around.

Tamaska stood frozen at the base of the stairs, up against the wall, right as another vampire swooped in and grabbed her tightly by the neck.

Where the fuck had he come from? How many more waited? How many more were going to come?

But at least they’d started to show themselves, and now he knew there were at least two, he could fight.

“Let her go.”
