“I can’t hide my feelings for you anymore, so I’m taking you with me, no matter what you think about it.”

Kodiak waited to hear Tamaska reciprocate and say that she had feelings for him, too. He turned his head to look at her, but she didn’t say anything. Her expression had turned to one of shock and confusion.

His stomach knotted. It had been too early to admit his feelings, way too early. Now he might lose her. For a fleeting moment, he nearly turned back towards the hut.

Instead, he kept driving. He couldn’t imagine living without his pack or without her, which meant he would have to achieve the impossible and find a way to keep them both.

Kodiak

Tamaska remained quiet, much to Kodiak’s relief, as they sped closer to the western suburbs of Sydney, where the clubhouse lay, where humans were forbidden. The tree-lined countryside was fast being replaced by houses standing side by side.

Kodiak didn’t want to answer any more questions, so her silence was a welcome reprieve. His mind was fully occupied simply by driving as fast as possible. At the same time, he fought the desire to pull over into the emergency lane, take Tamaska in his arms, and tell her everything was going to be all right.

But he wasn’t sure it was going to be all right.

It was one thing to be a lone wolf in all the ways he was. Quite another to be cut off, kicked out of his pack. That would mean no other pack would want him.

And he wanted to say he didn’t care. But he did. These people, his pack… Tamaska was right…they were family.

And to lose family like that would be hard.

Especially with Tamaska. He’d find a way to provide. To make sure she was okay.

If the vampires weren’t after her.

If he hadn’t fucked things by killing them on their own territory.

Claiming she was in danger would only go so far, and the fact was, not only had Kodiak crossed into their domain unasked, but so had Tamaska.

And…all that had consequences.

So no, he didn’t know if it would be okay.

Tension knotted his muscles, his cortisol reaching dangerous levels when he imagined what he was about to do. Yet he didn’t veer from his course, not even at the last intersection, where he could’ve turned in the opposite direction. He wasn’t one to run away from problems or danger.

But he was potentially bringing both right into the pack’s sanctuary. He refused to picture how they would react. Especially not now, as he parked his car by the main building.

A shiver prickled across the hairs on the back of his neck.

A warning, one he needed to heed.

He was bringing danger down on the pack and they would know it. So would Olcan. But what else could he do? He needed the information the team might have. Should have. And even without all these things, like crossing lines and bonding with a human, that danger would come down on the pack, anyway.

The vampires taking the Blood Opal? Ash finding out weird things about it? Marking Tamaska?

Things were bigger than him and a human.

Some might not see it that way, but he was prepared for that.

They had a bigger problem than humans. The vampires were up to something, and they’d been planning this for a long time.

He didn’t have to have evidence of that. He felt it, sitting heavy and cold in his guts.

Kodiak looked at the clubhouse.

No lights blazed inside, an additional warning. Something was up, and he just hoped he wasn’t too late to help his pack.
