“Stay here,” he commanded, turning to Tamaska.

He got out of the car, then he headed towards the front door. He stopped. The front door might be a bad idea. Maybe the side entrance would be a better option. So he veered to the left, staying out of sight just in case someone watched through a window.

Dread rocked him to the core as he eased open the door.

His eyes adjusted quickly to the darkness inside. Seeing nothing out of place, he moved forward, employing all of his senses to help him work out the source of his unease. Nothing smelled out of place. There was only the typical pack scent in the air—not even a hint of anyone else, human or supernatural.

Though it seemed off, not right, and—

Something hard crashed into the back of his neck, sending him crashing to the floor. His hands automatically reached out to break his fall. What the fuck? Pain ricocheted through him, as well as shock.

Who the hell would dare attack him here? He didn’t smell vampires. But it wasn’t human. Too strong. He was up and on his feet in seconds. It felt like a lifetime.

Stunned, he lost a few seconds before he even considered retaliating. This place should have been safe.

Kodiak spun around, ignoring the pain drumming in the back of his neck. The attacker didn’t belong there, and Kodiak was going to teach them a lesson for coming into the wolves’ lair.

His wolf demanded to be released for the fight, but Kodiak held him back. He wanted to face the attacker before releasing his wolf.

To his annoyance, when he turned in the direction of the attack, there was no one there.

Fuck. I’m too slow.

Kodiak cursed himself. He was better than this. He never should have let anyone hit him in the first place.

But they had and where the fuck were they?

His ears detected a slight sound to his right. Out of the corner of his vision, he saw someone standing close, swinging something towards his head.

He ducked into a squat, avoiding the plank of wood that would have collided hard against his body. This time, determined not to lose the opportunity, he put his hands on the floor and swung his leg around, striking the person’s legs from behind and causing them to fall.

The person yelled, dropping the plank.

Kodiak frowned. That sound was familiar. He sprung from the floor, spinning around to check if there was anyone else around before returning his attention to the attacker.

Hie raised his fists, ready to defend himself. Kodiak’s eyes widened as he got a good look at the person on the ground.

“What the fuck, Shota?” Why was someone from his own pack attacking him?

Dread knotted tighter in Kodiak’s gut, which churned painfully as Shota rose from the floor.

Shota’s hands formed tight fists. “Kodiak? What the fuck are you doing, creeping around like that?”

“No lights were on, and I got the feeling something was up.” Kodiak let his hands drop to his sides.

Someone needed to step this back and he was the beta.

This fight, whatever it was, wasted time and energy and nothing more.

“So, you decided to come in through the side door like a criminal?” But his packmate didn’t seem to share that view. He itched for a fight.

“No. Tell me what the fuck is going on here.” Kodiak glared at Shota. “Why were you ready to smash my brains out with a piece of wood?”

“Olcan’s orders,” answered Shota. “We have to be ready.”

“For what?”

“You’d know if you’d been here.”
