“Just thinking whether I should bury your remains or leave them for the sun’s rays.”

Where the fuck was his team?

Normally they were locked in during things like this; everyone knew where everyone else was and what they did. Their bond tight.

Not now.

He reached hard with his mind. The pack connection faded and strengthened and faded again. And his guts churned.

The vampire grinned. “Buying time?”

“Planning your demise. Or maybe you’re scared.”

The vampire shifted and inside his wolf growled low, right at the surface, desperate for freedom.

He tried to reach out to the others to let them know the vampires were inside the front yard perimeter, but he sensed nothing.

That wasn’t right.

It had to be the vampires’ doing. Perhaps something to do with the Blood Opal, now that they had it. Some kind of strange powers that it contained. It would make sense for the vampires to want it if it gave them an advantage like that.

The vampire edged closer. And Kodiak moved back, down a small alley between the main building and another smaller one. The narrow alley would make it tricky to fight. But at least it drew the fucking vampire away. Kodiak braced himself.

Tamaska was still inside. He called to Ash but didn’t find her, so he had no way of knowing if they’d made it down to the cellar yet. Or…

Or if these monsters had somehow gotten inside.

He dismissed that thought immediately.

Instead, he needed to give her as much of a chance to get down to the cellar as possible.

He lunged for the vampire, connecting his fist with its shoulder.

It laughed and came at him.

Even in the narrow space, Kodiak shifted and spun around, now positioning himself between the main building and the bloodsucker.

Its eyes widened, then narrowed. “Maybe I’ll let you live if you move and give her to me.”

“Who?” Kodiak squared his shoulders. He wasn’t about to give up Tamaska.

“The pretty human. You know who. Admis wants her. And what Admis wants, he gets…”

The words did their job, made the anger lick upwards inside him, but somehow he kept himself back, didn’t fall for the bait and strike out.

The next time he came for the vampire it would be real. Designed to hurt and maim. Maybe kill if he couldn’t subdue.

He’d sure as hell make the vampire pay for daring to come this close to his clubhouse with the intention of taking Tamaska. Marked or not, he wasn’t about to let the vampires have her.

The vampire swung at him, something sharp and vicious in its fist. How many weapons did it have?

He twisted out of the way, the ugly knife, sharp like a vampire’s tooth, grazing his clothes.

He lunged once more towards the vampire, ready to kill. He wasn’t about to let a single one go anywhere near Tamaska. And he needed one alive. This one would do. He went to grab it, but the vampire moved out of the way at the last minute.

Kodiak punched the air with so much force that he stumbled, as he tried to keep his balance. Shit. He couldn’t afford mistakes, and there was a glint in the eye of the creature…one that made him uneasy.

But he didn’t have time to follow that thought as the vampire went for him, sending Kodiak spinning out of the way.
