He edged forward, reaching out to his pack.

There, at the edges, he heard them, as if from a distance.

They all fought, some were injured. No one had a vampire captive. Yet.

The pack connection remained shadowed, if not broken. But he didn’t know if anyone heard, as his calls remained unanswered. Not being able to reach the others unnerved him.

He’d nearly started down the hallway when a shadow caught his attention. Ready to pounce, he managed to stop himself in time as the darkness crystallized into Olcan’s wolf.

Olcan’s wolf limped towards Kodiak’s, barely able to walk. How could that have happened? He knew he and Olcan would be matched in a fight, and while he was sure he could take the man, that was because he was younger and knew him. But Olcan was strong, and a veteran vampire killer.

How the hell could he be bested?

He reached out for him with a paw.Olcan.

I’ll live.

The pack connection strengthened as Olcan came even closer, leaning a little on Kodiak.

Who did this?asked Kodiak.

They’re no longer a threat.Olcan nudged at him.

The wolves touched noses, communicating on a deeper level. He shivered, not liking the implications.

This wasn’t the way things were supposed to go.

His alpha might live, but he was injured badly and needed medical help right away. Something he’d never seen.

No time for that, said Olcan, as if he already knew what Kodiak was thinking.Looks like you had the fight of your life.

You, too, he said and shook his head. There were so many of them.Icouldn’t get one alive.

Me either. They played and taunted, and then went for the kill. No option but to take them out.

Kodiak tried to help Olcan walk, but it wasn’t easy in wolf form. He didn’t dare change back since he needed to be ready to fight. The only thing he knew for sure was that more vampires would attack.

I’ll be fine. I only need a moment to catch my breath.Olcan paused.

Kodiak needed to get his alpha somewhere safe. He didn’t like the way Olcan was struggling. It wasn’t a simple injury, and they needed everyone in the pack fighting.

I’m not going to stop fighting.Olcan growled through the pack connection.

Kodiak’s wolf nuzzled Olcan’s. Stopping is precisely what Olcan needed to do, but Kodiak wasn’t about to tell him that. It seemed as if Olcan’s soul was wounded as much as his physical form, and Kodiak didn’t want to say anything that could cause his alpha further distress.

The best thing he could do was be there for his alpha. Kodiak hoped against all odds that no more vampires would come. He would have to protect Olcan, and he wasn’t sure how well that would go in the narrow corridor.

Kodiak had to get him into one of the side rooms, or better yet, the basement. He used his head to gently encourage Olcan forward, just a bit farther.

A sharp scream sent his ochre fur upright, electrifying it with static energy.

The tone was familiar.

Tamaska was in trouble.
