I instantly stiffen and look away but that doesn’t stop the trembling that’s started in my hands. Knox notices and he grabs my hand in his before using his body to block mine. Then he crowds me back against my locker.

“Hey, what’s the matter? Are you alright?” he asks with concern etching in his voice.

“Uh, yeah, I’m fine. Just felt a little dizzy for a moment there,” I say, definitely not wanting to tell him what’s really going on.

“Okay, let’s go. I’m taking you home,” he says and makes a move to go but I pull at his jacket to stop him and keep him in place.

“What, why? I’m fine. It was nothing,”

“You look pale. I’m taking you home so I can have the doctor come over and look at you,” he says in a low voice.

“I’m fine. Let’s just go to class,” I say with a heavy sigh.

“But—”

“Please? I don’t want to argue,”

“Okay, fine. Have it your way,” he says as he begins to walk us toward class with his arm wrapped around me again. I don’t know if it’s genuine or not, but I do know that he’s doing this to show everyone that I’m his.

RAINE

To saythat this morning was interesting would be an understatement. It feels like Déjà vu as we walk into class. All the chatter instantly stops as all eyes are now on us. I don’t pay them any attention as I take my usual seat at the front.

Knox and his friends surround me like they did the last time I was in this class. I don’t even have the energy to be annoyed. I just stare at the whiteboard in front of me and ignore everyone around me.

That doesn’t last for long because a moment later, Kinsley walks into class and takes the seat to my right which happens to be the one in front Asher. She settles in and a few seconds later, I feel her stare trained on the side of my face. I try to ignore her too, but when it gets too much, I turn around to glare at her.

“What?” I snap at her. She goes to open her mouth, to probably say some bullshit but I stop her. “Don’t!”

She looks like she wants to speak but I just turn and face the front again, dismissing her. I’m still so fucking mad and hurt by her actions that I can’t find it in me to talk to her yet.

“Baby, be nice. Talk to her,” Knox says from behind me. I spin around in my chair to face him, giving him one of my death glares.

“Why the fuck should I?” I question, knowing that she can hear me, but I don’t care.

“Because she’s your friend,” he says and I scoff at him.

“Friend? You didn’t want me to have any of those, remember?” I ask with a sickly sweet smile on my face.

“I thought we went through this already,” he says with a sigh.

“We didn’t and she’s no friend of mine. Friends don’t abandon their friends just because some dickhead told them to, and definitely not for some dick either,” I say while turning my glare pointedly in Asher’s direction.

Before either of them can respond, I spin back around and Mr. Smith walks in at the same time.

“Miss Carrington, you’re needed in the counselor’s office,” he says as soon as he’s standing by his desk.

I nod my head. Without a word, I grab my stuff and head to the office. When I get there, I’m greeted by Mrs. Briggs, the nice old lady who’s the counselor.

“Hello, Miss Carrington, it’s nice to see you,” she says with a warm smile on her face as she motions for me to sit down.

“Hello. I was told you wanted to see me? What can I do for you?” I ask.

“I just needed to speak to you about your college applications. I’m afraid I have some bad news,” she says with an apologetic expression on her face.

“Um, what happened? What’s wrong with my applications?” I ask, suddenly starting to feel nervous.
