“Are you ready now or do I need to slap you in the face to wake you up entirely? Because I can do that too.”

“Never been more ready.” It’s growing steadily, that fire deep inside me. There’s no way I’m letting that wedding happen. No way. I’ll fight tooth and nail. I’ll fight my instincts that scream at me to turn around. I’ll fight for a happy life.

Evangeline is mine; she was never his.

“Well, get dressed, you idiot.” I shake my head out of the dark haze and move quickly, but I stop halfway, when something pops into my head.

“I’m not invited.”

“Of course not,” Moreen says like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “But I am, and I need a plus-one.”

Chapter Thirty-three

Evangeline

“You look beautiful,” Topper says, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. My eyes catch his in the mirror, and I smile at him softly.

“It truly is a beautiful dress,” I answer. “But its meaning is ugly.”

I stare at myself in the mirror and disgust is all I feel.

My dress is made of layers of the most exquisite and delicate fabric. The skirt is loose, and it flows with every step. The top is tight around my bosom, but it looks elegant and sophisticated. The dress has a golden hue because of the shimmers that coat it. Topper and Moreen picked it out, and both have impeccable taste.

But a wedding dress symbolises undying love, friendship, and respect, and mine represents none of those. It’s just an expensive outfit to play along with my family’s endgame.

But I’m putting a stop to all of this. My nightmare will crash down around me, and I’ll drag myself out of it.

“The tiara reminds me of something though,” Topper says, raising his eyebrows, and I know exactly what he means.

“A princess,” I mumble.

The tiara was a gift from Thomas’s mother, and though it’s beautiful and quite expensive, it reminds me of Chester.

Chester meant the world to me. He still does. He represents love, friendship, and respect. He made me believe my dreams were possible. He broke my heart, but I can’t let go of him just yet.

I’ll hold on to our love because it’s beautiful. I’ll hold on to the memories, even though they are marred with pain. I’d rather suffer than forget about Chester and the feelings that once pumped through my heart and veins for him.

But letting go will be impossible because my heart is branded by his touch.

I’m confident our story isn’t over yet because I saw love in his eyes this morning. I saw the struggle and how it eats at him. His beautiful eyes showed me strength to fight for what he wants.

He loves me and I’ll give him the time he needs to figure out which path belongs to him.

Let him fight his own battle while I fight mine.

The text he sent me yesterday is my fuel to fight my family even more and stand up for my future. His beautiful words give me hope and proves that Chester and I have more memories to make and that I can dream of chasing my own future.

I grab my phone, and I go straight to our text conversation. I could recite it because I’ve read it repeatedly, cherishing his words.

Princess,

I thought of love as being empty, shallow almost. I had no desire to ever chase it until you. You knocked the air out of me the day I first met you, and I fell … hard. I dove straight into love. I swam in it, and my heart absorbed it until I grew addicted to it, to you.

I dream of a life with you by my side now. One where dreams come true, and love is never out of the equation. A life where nothing seems impossible and joy is pushed to the front. A life where your eyes shine bright and your lips can only smile. You are what makes my heart beat.

My perspective of love changed. Yet, there’s a villain in my story. He’s tough to defeat, and he stops me from chasing after the girl I love. But I’ll fight it because, this time, I have a new strength. It’s powerful, strong, and dedicated. It’s love, princess. It’s you.

I’ll fight.
