But he finally touched her fingers with his and murmured, “I’ll be here, if you need me.”

For a second, she contemplated telling him everything. She’d like to think that Bronx wouldn’t rush to the doctors or that they’d start poking, prodding, and asking her all kinds of questions.

Before maybe silencing her beast.

Then her dragon flapped her wings inside Percy’s mind, and she knew this was a chance she couldn’t risk losing, even if it meant lying to Bronx.

So Percy nodded and dashed toward the small hill alongside the lake. And when she plunked down on the ground, it took every bit of willpower she possessed not to look at Bronx.

Instead, she said to her dragon,Okay, let’s go over some things, and then we’ll try to shift our finger.

And as she went to work, the rest of the world faded away. She was getting so bloody close to her goal.

Although her guilt at hiding the truth from Bronx never fully went away.

* * *

Bronx knewPercy was keeping something from him. Her pupils had flashed once—he thought he was the only one to see it since he couldn’t keep his eyes off the female—and then she’d scurried away.

Her dragon was back, in some capacity. He said to his dragon,I only hope she asks for help if she needs it.

We all try to shift at first, before we’re ready. No doubt all the children make her yearn to try it by herself.

He grunted.Maybe.

He watched her, but she merely sat on the ground, cross-legged, staring out at the lake.

Hudson’s voice garnered his attention. “She’s doing well, Bronx.”

Forcing his gaze from Percy, he faced his brother, who wore an amused expression. “What?”

Hudson lowered his voice so only he could hear it. “I saw you holding hands, Bronx. What’s going on between you two?”

If it were anyone else, he’d tell them to sod off. However, Hudson had been the one to help him after Edith’s death, and then Bronx had been there to help Hudson after his first mate’s death. If he would talk to anyone about Percy, it would be Hudson.

Bronx sighed. “I don’t know.”

Hudson raised his brows and kept his voice low. “That’s more honest than I expected.”

He glared. “I’m supposed to be her bloody teacher, Hudson. Not to mention she’s half my age.”

Hudson shrugged. “Does that really matter? You wouldn’t be the first dragon-shifter to have an age gap with your mate. Dr. McFarland even went the other way, with her male being younger than her.”

Of course Hudson would bring that up. “That’s only a twelve-year difference, not nearly twenty-two.”

His brother snorted. “Been thinking about this a lot, have you?”

Bronx debated what to say, but his beast spoke up.This is Hudson. At least be honest with him. Maybe he’ll be on my side and convince you that you’re being an idiot.

Great, as if he needed that. Although as his brother tilted his head in question, he sighed. “Yes, I have.”

“Have you kissed her yet?”

He shook his head. “No. Until my dragon can tell if she’s our true mate or not, I won’t. Er, not that I ever will.”

Hudson grinned. “I’ve heard that before.” He glared, but Hudson paid him no mind. “But in all seriousness, don’t completely push someone away if there’s even a chance of it working out. I know my mate wasn’t looking for a male again—and fuck, I can’t blame her, given her arsehole ex—and yet Sarah took that leap of faith with me. And I like to think she’s happy now.”

As Hudson stared over at Sarah, who was frowning down at Mark, Bronx noticed the adoring look that came over his brother’s face.
