And for a second, envy shot through him.

His dragon spoke up.It’s possible for us to have that again.

It was then he noticed Percy jumping up and dancing in place. Narrowing his eyes, he scanned her and saw one of her fingers had turned into a talon.

Before he could debate whether to go to her or not, Percy met his gaze and grinned. Then she held the talon toward him. And he decided fuck it, she wanted to share the win with him. And so he ran up the hill as fast as he could.

And Bronx was unable to take his eyes from her flashing pupils the entire time. Had her dragon finally stuck around?

But when they had almost reached her, his dragon said softly,She’s ours.

He stopped in place.What?

She’s our true mate. Her dragon makes it so I can recognize her.

A mixture of emotions rushed through him—fear, excitement, dread, wanting, wariness, and joy.

Percy frowned at him, her pupils remaining round, and her finger changed back into a finger. She was close enough that he could hear her. “What’s wrong, Bronx? If it’s about my dragon, don’t worry. She’s not rogue or crazy.”

He tried to put on a smiling face, tried to forget what his dragon had told him. And yet, he’d vowed not to lie to her.

So he walked a few paces closer before stopping again, which only deepened her frown.

He took a second to memorize how the sun played on her hair, highlighting the roaring dragon birthmark on her neck, and even how the blue of her eyes dazzled with a multitude of colors he might never be able to fully identify.

She was so light, beautiful, and the most carefree he’d seen her to date.

And he was about to ruin it all.

No longer a coward, he said softly, “Your dragon came out long enough for me to recognize it, Percy.”

“Recognize what?”

He took a deep breath and said, “That you’re my true mate.”

After her eyes widened a beat, she turned and ran in the opposite direction.

ChapterTwenty-Five

No, no, no.This couldn’t be happening to her. It couldn’t.

Percy had been having the best day ever. She’d spent more time with her dragon than ever before and even managed to embrace her beast long enough to change her finger into a talon.

Even the look she’d shared with Bronx had made her heart race. He’d looked so proud, and excited, and happy.

For her.

In that moment, she’d decided then and there to tell him everything about her dragon, how long she’d been around, and how sorry she was for hiding it. He would surely understand her, as Bronx had a knack for that.

Him racing toward her had sent a rush of happiness through her body too. She’d never had anyone to share things with—at least since her dragon had been silenced—and she’d found a friend.

Maybe more than a friend.

Not that she was ready to tackle that.

Then he’d stopped, looked appalled, and said she was his true mate. Panic had set in first because she’d read about true mates, mate-claim frenzies, and what happened as a result. And just the idea of being used for sex, over and over again, until she became pregnant sent a mixture of fear and disappointment through her.

So she ran, and ran, and kept going, ignoring anyone who called out her name. She needed to get away, to ensure she didn’t have to endure something close to what she’d had before, and then think of a plan.
