At least her dragon was still there and hadn’t disappeared. Although her beast remained quiet as she ran and ran, going through a small forest and up another hill, and kept going until she thought she might drop from exhaustion.

And still, she knew she needed to hide. Otherwise, they’d drag her back to Stonefire and lock her in a room with Bronx so his dragon could do whatever he wanted with her.

Percy didn’t know how long she’d been running when she finally spotted an old cottage with a mostly missing roof and went inside.

There was an old chair and some bric-a-brac scattered about. But the most important thing was half the cottage was protected from any potential rain.

She moved to a corner, the farthest from the door, where she could keep an eye on the entrance and slid to the ground. After tugging out the hair tie and letting her locks tumble about her shoulders, she drew her knees close and hugged them tightly.

After everything, after all the shit she’d been through in her life, Percy had thought she’d finally turned the page and could maybe even find some sort of happiness.

But now she was alone again, needing to protect herself, without anyone else to rely on. Because no matter what bullshit they claimed about Stonefire wanting to help her, they’d always support Bronx over her. Always.

Her dragon finally spoke up.I’m here. You’re not alone.

She wiped the tears from her cheeks and replied,Sorry, dragon. I spent so many years without you that I haven’t grown used to the fact you’re there.

Her beast paused before saying,I’m still trying to get used to not being locked away inside your head. I could sometimes see and hear things but could never move beyond a barrier.

So you weren’t just sleeping?

Not always. Although later, I mostly slept to pass the time.

Silence fell in her mind, and Percy debated what to say.

It was just a blatant reminder of how fucked up she still was. Bloody hell, she couldn’t even be at ease around a second part of herself.

Hugging her legs tighter, she watched as the rain began falling. The steady patter against the stone floor of the open half soothed her, as did watching the water run away from her, toward the far side. Anything that kept her from thinking about Bronx, Violet, or even Stonefire in general was a welcome distraction.

Eventually, her dragon said,I don’t think being a true mate would be a bad thing. Doesn’t it mean we have a greater chance of happiness with Bronx?

She laughed derisively. Our chances of happiness haven’t been great to date, so I wouldn’t count on it.

Her beast huffed. Then what? We constantly go on the run? We’ve learned how the DDA doesn’t like that.

Wait. Have you been learning along with me?

Yes. The sphere shape was to protect myself inside it.

Protect from what?

Anything. Everything. Hiding is all I’ve known, apart from a few months.

Then why aren’t you hiding now?

Her dragon paused so long, Percy thought she wouldn’t answer. But finally, her beast said,Because you’re sad, and I don’t like it.

I’m not sad. I’m afraid.

Her dragon huffed. You can’t lie to me.

She growled but knew her beast was right. Although a few techniques and practices could keep select information private, her inner dragon could hear her thoughts and feel her feelings. She knew Percy better than anyone.

And her dragon would be honest with her too, if she asked for it.

It rained harder, and she kept an eye on the water running on the ground. She couldn’t stay here forever. But where would she go?

Her dragon spoke up.Go back to Stonefire.
