“My dragon recognized her as our true mate, I told her, and she ran.”

Tristan grunted. “Not the best start.”

Hudson glared at Tristan. “That’s not helping.”

Bronx stared in the direction Percy had dashed, even though she was long gone. “I think she’ll just keep running if I go after her. Someone needs to find her.”

Even just saying those words twisted his heart.

Hudson placed a hand on his shoulder and patted it. “I can go.”

Tristan shook his head. “You’re Bronx’s brother, and she’ll see you as trying to catch her to give to him.”

Hudson frowned. “I wouldn’t bloody force her to do anything.”

Bronx jumped in. “No, but Tristan’s right. Remember, her entire life, she’s never had a choice in anything. So she probably views being a true mate as just another version of that.”

His dragon grumbled.I would never hurt her. We’re nothing like those bastards in the facility or even the orphanage.

We know that. But Percy is still recovering from a lifetime of pain, suffering, and hardship. Trust won’t be easy for her.

Tristan sighed. “Fine, I’ll go. But, Hudson, help Ella round up the children. Then have Jane run back to tell Kai what’s happened and get more help.”

Hudson nodded and dashed down the path. Tristan made to leave, but Bronx said, “Be gentle with her, Tristan. She’s had a fucking hard life.”

The dragonman’s face softened. “I will. Arabella had difficulties, as well, and I’ve learned from that.”

Arabella was Tristan’s younger sister, who had been tortured by dragon hunters as a teen. She was doing brilliantly with her mate and children in Scotland now, which gave Bronx hope for Percy’s future.

Bronx grunted. “Thank you.”

Tristan nodded once and dashed off in the same direction Percy had.

His dragon spoke up.The clan will help find her.

I know.

But it still hurt that she’d run from him.

Hurt that she thought he’d hurt her, force her, and who the bloody hell knew what else.

His dragon spoke up.Maybe once the initial panic wears off, she’ll recognize how we’re different.

I hope so.

His sister-in-law Sarah and her two boys approached him. When she was close enough, Sarah gently touched his arm. “I heard about what happened. But don’t worry, aye? I have faith someone from Stonefire will find her and bring her home.”

Home.Yes, he wanted Stonefire to be Percy’s home.

Even if it meant avoiding her for the rest of his life, he’d do it to give her that chance.

* * *

Percy shiveredas the light faded from the sky. The rain was letting up, which meant she’d have to make a decision soon about what to do. She would either run or hope that Stonefire would prove to be a better and more understanding lot than anyone she’d known in her past.

Her dragon was still in her dragon form, curled up and asleep inside Percy’s head. True to her word, her beast had stayed with her.

Percy should have been happier about it. After all, that had been her goal—to get her dragon back.
