… And that was like a splash of water against him.

He didn’t want to scare her right before he left, and immediately broke the kiss, seeing her dazed expression – and resisting the urge to dive back in against those sweetly parted lips, but held back.

“That is how you request no spinach…” he said hoarsely, swallowing hard. “I will never insist on the green stuff with that – andthatis what was missing at our wedding and last night.”

Her eyes met his and he watched her try to compose herself, nodding nervously as she got to her feet. She stood there for a moment, unmoving, before turning to look at him.

She opened her mouth to say something, but he interrupted.

“Thank you for trusting me with our first kiss,” he said softly, watching her. “I’m glad you felt you could. I will not betray that trust, Destiny.”

Instead, she nodded, looking away from him.

“I’ll go make some coffee and something for you to eat before you have to leave,” he offered politely. “That will give you privacy to get ready. Okay?”

“I appreciate it,” she whispered – and her cheeks were flushed so prettily that he wanted to hug her, kiss each of them, and tell her it was going to be okay… yet didn’t.

… And fifteen minutes later, he was watching her car pull out of the driveway.

CHAPTER7

DESTINY

Destiny was reelingfrom that kiss and thought about it repeatedly all night long while at work – along with the understanding that she’d blown her chance. Killian was leaving for Afghanistan, and she had no idea how long it would be before he came back.

When he returned, would he kiss her again? Would they try to consummate the marriage? She really appreciated that he seemed to be genuinely caring and understanding when it came to her feelings… because she didn’t want things to be awkward or tense between them.

Maybe she was naïve?

She figured they would just dothat… and be done quickly – smiling to herself as she pictured the both of them waving their hand idly towards the bedroom in the distance like they’d done when they had been talking or dancing.

He was really quite nice… and handsome.

Normally she looked at guys who were wearing jeans, boots, motorcycle gear, or western wear – because that was what came walking into the bar… but Killian was clean cut, even when he was wearing a t-shirt and jeans. He just had this ‘Do no wrong’air to him that seemed to call to her.

His hair was shortly cropped close to his head and dark blond, but those eyes of his were incredible… and fathomless. In horror movies, the bad guy sometimes had black eyes where the pupil would spread, overtaking the white portion… but not Killian – they were just intensely dark. She had a hard time holding his gaze because it felt like he could see right through her.

… And in his uniform when they married?

There was a certain ‘distinguished’ and ‘boasting’ stance to him as he stood there with her. Maybe it was just the uniform, but for a moment? She thought that perhaps he was exceedingly happy or proud to be marrying her… and he’d even bought her a ring!

That was the last thing she’d expected and nearly crumbled when he slid it onto her finger, looking at her with such longing and smiled. Combined with the cake, the dancing, and ‘kisses that weren’tkisses’according to him…

Destiny chuckled as she washed up the last of the glasses before heading home, shaking her head at his mischievousness. She could hear his voice in her head and realized that she would truly miss him.

“My lips are nowhere near yours… so we aren’t kissing.”

“Crazy man,” she said softly under her breath, grabbing her purse and clocking out. “Goodnight Harvey!”

“Want me to walk you out?”

“Nahhhh, I’m good,” Destiny waved him off and headed towards the door, moving across the parking lot towards her car.

A tiny part of her was slightly disappointed that there wasn’t another rose under the wiper blade and realized there was going to be several unexpected things missing in her life. Driving home, she realized that the house would be empty, no warm cuddling, and no dancing in the candlelight.

Getting out of the car, she heading towards the doorway to go inside… stomach growling. She had been craving something comforting, trying to ‘hide’ the ache that knowing her dance partner and new friend would leave behind.A grilled cheese sounded so good right now,she thought, and opened the door – stopping in her tracks.

There, pulled in front of the door, not quite blocking it in but definitely in her line of sight, was a bouquet of pale pink roses in a vase… with a card on a chair from the tiny dining room table that Killian had purchased for them. She closed the door behind her and laughed nervously.
