He could have put them on the counter – or on the table – but obviously he wanted her to see them the moment she walked inside… and it was so terribly sweet of him.

Picking up the card, she tore it open… not sure what to expect, and heard her phone chime, alerting her that she had a text message. Looking at it, she saw it was Killian.

I just wanted to make sure you made it home safely. Text me when you get home – okay?

Opening the card, she saw the photo in front had some glittery wedding bands and flowers on the cardstock – opening it slowly, she hesitated. Her eyes widened in shock and confusion as she looked at the contents. There was a check inside for a thousand dollars… from him.

“What in the…” she whispered aloud, and began to read his handwriting inside the card. He had very tiny, precise, angled handwriting that was a little tough to read, but she could make it out.

Dear wife,

Before you protest or say anything – hear me out…

Yesterday was probably the best day of my life in well over the last five years. I adored dancing with you, spending time with you, and making you laugh… combined with snuggling?

That was simply wonderful – so, thank you.

I took the liberty of setting up your computer with your email, so all you have to do is click on the envelope and it will load. (Hint, hint)

I stocked the fridge with some iron rich foods – and bought you prenatal vitamins. According to the pharmacist at the I.G.A., you should go ahead and start taking them several months before ~ that ~ happens.

(I’m waving my hand, I swear.)

Take the check – put it in your bank account for emergencies until I can get a bank card sent to you. It might take a week or two, and I would feel better if you had money if something happened.

Killian

Staring at the check, she wasn’t sure what to say to him.

This was terribly sweet of him to watch out for her – and she wasn’t used to this. Staring at the phone in one hand, the check and card in the other, she weakly sat down and called Killian.

“Hello? Did you make it home?” he said, answering on the first ring.

“Yes… and this was too much.”

“For emergencies…”

“I know, but Killian…”

“Please?” he interrupted quietly, and she could hear him moving around, followed by a door shutting. “Sorry, I needed some privacy and walked outside. Please, deposit the check in case you have an issue before I can split my accounts. I don’t feel right leaving… and I don’t have a choice.”

“This is just… not normal. It feels like we are doing everything backwards and I keep thinking that I made a mistake, dragging you down with me, but if it’s a mistake… why does it make me so happy to know you are there?”

“I feel the same way.”

“Is this weird?”

“Do we have to understand it or be able to explain what led us to meeting? Can we just look at it as two people, in the right place at the right time, taking a chance at happiness someday for the both of us? If I’m willing to put both feet in the deep end – will you take my hand and join me?”

“I did when I married you.”

“Which was a brilliant idea from you, if I remember correctly,” he teased softly. “I’m playing with you. Don’t get quiet – and please don’t fight me each time I want to make sure my little bride is safe, taken care of, or pampered.”

“I’m not used to any of this,” she whispered openly.

“Getused to it,” he retorted, chuckling. “You got yourself a halfway decent guy. Now, did you check your laptop out – or did you call me because you couldn’t wait to hear my voice?”

She laughed nervously, feeling her cheeks warm as she realized it was the latter of the two… and she’d just been caught.
