He turned back to me with that killer smirk again. “There’s no lock, little dove. You’re in my bedroom. I don’t have a need for locks, especially not on the outside.”

He pulled his black shirt on, and my brain started to think straight again. “Why am I in your bedroom?”

He shrugged and it only increased my anger. “It seemed easier. I know I can keep a better eye on you here and there’s not nearly enough things to smash in here.”

I laid back against the pillows, defeated. He’d outsmarted me, and I hated that, but I was also super tired.

“If you’re a good girl, I may loosen them a bit when I return.”

I threw him one of my angriest death glares as he left the room with a deep chuckle, leaving me alone again.

Why the hell did my body react that way to him? I’d never had that reaction to anyone, not even Zane and for an older man, Zane had a body on him.

I just hoped Zane came and rescued me before I let my body betray my mind, or maybe it was the other way around. Honestly, maybe they were in cahoots with each other, but the longer I stayed here. The more danger I was in of falling into bed, or rather having him untie me on his bed and having him take me for all I was worth.

Halen

“Rusty,” I called out to the boy as he stood guard at the kitchens. Ben had taken the duty of looking after Paisley now that she was tied up and all three brothers didn’t need to guard her. “Can you call up the chef, I want to have him prepare dinner for me and the woman.”

“You sure you want us to untie her?” he asked.

I looked over at him, over the top of the plans I had in my hands, as if I wasn’t sure he’d actually said it. He looked away instantly and made a move to go and speak to the chef. Honestly, she’s just a woman.

How hard could she be to handle?

As I turned the pages of the plan, I took notes of what Zane was really planning with the city. He wanted to turn it into a den of sin, no more empire to run, but rather a city full of corruption, sex and greed.

That fucker wanted to take over my part of the city.

He had the perfect house, the perfect life, and what seems like a pretty rock solid mistress and now he wanted to take over my life? Hell fucking no.

I threw the plans over the floor and sat back in my chair. There was something about this woman, something that may just help me with winning this goddamn war my brother was intent on starting. I didn’t know how, but I could feel she was the answer to all of this.

Rusty returned to his spot at the door and nodded to me to advise me that the chef had his orders. I moved toward the door and looked back over at Rusty.

“You can have her restraints removed,” I said. “And find her a dress or something to wear.”

Rusty looked at me, terror in his eyes. I doubt he’d even seen a woman before, but to be confronted with a firecracker like Paisley, now that was an eye opener and I found it funny.

“Just do it, Rus.”

He nodded and moved out of the dining hall and toward my bedroom. I headed down to the gardens below. The artificial light I had installed after I’d moved my operation down here still worked a treat. I could still grow my garden’s supply of poisons and still maintain life down here without a threat from above ground. My own garden of eden.

I moved out to the side pathway and headed toward the entrance to my dungeon. When I’d had this place built, I made sure the only entrance to the dungeon was on the outside and it was foolproof.

As I turned the corner, I motioned to the guard who was always on duty and he opened the door for me. Moving down the dank stone steps, I made my way to the cell we kept our prisoner in. I’d made five cells but only housed one person down here. It added to his sentence by being alone.

As I turned to his cell, I saw him in the corner, huddled into the fetal position. His face was covered in dirt, blood and sweat, his beard was long and straggly, his hair has started to gray prematurely.

“Hello, Jack.”

“What do you want?” he asked me, weakly. His voice was near a whisper.

“A little information,” I said, leaning against the wall to the side of his cell. “Turns out your old operation has started up again.”

I watched his reaction closely.

“Took them this long did it?”
