“She’s not. Alejandro was a monster. She is nothing like him.”

“I know that, and you know that, but you didn’t see her, Oz.” I shake my head. “The thing is, she could drain anyone at any time. But she chooses not to. She has lines she won’t cross, boundaries she’s put in place to keep herself in check, and today she blew them to pieces for us.”

“For me, you mean. I’m the asshole who got shot.”

“And I’m the asshole who asked her to heal you. We are who we are. I guess what I’m trying to say is that she is so far from a monster that it’s not even funny. But even if she were one, I don’t think it would make a difference. I’d still love her. I’m so head over heels for this girl, I’m not sure what I’m capable of myself.”

“That makes two of us, bro.”

Silence blankets us once more as he drives us out of the village. “Where should I go?”

“This thing have GPS?”

“Yeah.”

“Head to the nearest airstrip. If Apex is coming, that’s where they’ll land. With an SOS, they won’t bother with stealth.”

“Alright. How much are we going to tell them?”

“I’ll leave that up to Salem. From here on out, it has to be her call. I don’t want her to feel like we’ve trapped her. She’s had enough of that to last her a lifetime.” I lean my head back against the seat and close my eyes as Oz speeds along the road.

Oz slows down, and I open my eyes. “This is the airstrip?” It’s little more than a dirt road.

“Apparently. It’s a private one, so keep your eyes open. But it’s the closest one to the clinic.”

“Alright, pull over there out of the way and get your gun ready. I don’t think Cooper had an accomplice with what he said about Kay and retiring. I think, at the end there, if anyone was involved, he would have sold them out just to shift the blame. But just in case, do not let your guard down until we are in the fucking air.”

“You really think they’ll come?”

“You don’t?”

He shakes his head and sighs. “No, I do. It’s just weird. I’ve spent so long only having you at my back that I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to have a team.”

“It’s going to take some getting used to on all our parts.”

I lean back again and watch the sky, waiting.

“Why don’t you get some sleep? I’ll keep an eye out and wake you if anyone comes.”

“What about you?”

“I feel juiced. Must be from the healing.”

I nod and close my eyes. “Oz?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m glad you’re not dead,” I tell him, closing my eyes.

He’s quiet for a second before he starts laughing. “Me too, Zig. Me too.”

I’m notsure how long I’m out, but I jolt when Oz shakes my arm.

“They here?”

“Someone is. Look.”
