I look to where he’s pointing, and sure enough, I see the lights of a small aircraft as it begins its descent.

“You haven’t seen anyone else?”

“No. I was surprised myself. I expected someone to have followed us from the clinic. But it seems with all the confusion there today, they haven’t noticed us missing. Yet anyway. That won’t last, though.” He looks at his watch. “It’s been three hours since we left. They might think Alejandro is responsible. Especially if they can’t account for him.”

“Who knows? I’m not going to complain, though. Let’s get out and see who came.”

Oz climbs out first and holds the door open for me. I ease Salem down onto the seat and slide out, closing the door quietly behind me. I check my gun and hold it down by my leg.

“Are you ready for this?”

“Which part? Surprising them with the fact we’re not dead, telling them that their friend is a traitor, or letting them know we have a woman who can perform miracles?”

“All of the above.”

“Is anyone ever really ready for that shit?”

“Good point.”

We don’t say anything else as we watch the plane land. We wait as two men disembark with what looks like small artillery strapped to their backs. They don’t see us on the other side of the car, but they do see the car.

I listen to them as they approach. “Hot-wire the car. The clinic isn’t far from here. Then we can find out what the fuck is going on and why Cooper is even here to begin with,” Greg snaps.

I step around the car with Oz flanking me. “We can answer that.”

There’s dead silence for a second before I’m yanked into Greg’s arms. “Holy fuck. Holy fuck. I can’t believe it.” He pulls back before yanking Oz into his embrace too.

Crew grins at me, slapping me on the back. “I never thought I’d be so happy to see your ugly mugs.”

“Where’s Cooper?” Greg asks, pulling back from Oz and wiping his eyes.

When we don’t answer, Crew’s smile drops from his face.

“What’s going on?”

“Cooper betrayed us. He was working for the other side,” Oz tells them.

“What? No, come on. Cooper?” Greg protests, looking at us both. When we don’t back down, he visibly deflates. “You’re sure?”

I nod. “I’m sorry, Greg. I know you were closer to him than anyone else, but he admitted it. He sabotaged the plane.”

“Why?” he chokes out.

I move to the car door and open it before reaching inside and lifting Salem out. Her head flops to the side as I position her against my chest.

“Jesus. Is that the girl?” Greg asks as Crew draws closer. “Is she okay?”

“She will be, but we need to get out of here.”

“Come on then, let’s go.” Crew jogs back to the plane and waits for us to climb on board.

“Whose flying?” Oz asks.

“Milo,” Crew replies. Milo is a pilot we use when all our others are down. He’s a good guy, but he’s semi-retired.

“Where’s everyone else?”

“Home. Or mostly. We were closer and had the plane, so Evander sent us to check out the problem.”
