“Daisy!”

With a tapered glare at their reddening faces, I flipped them off before disappearing into the bedroom.

ETHAN

That cocksucking motherfucker!

I always hated Vance. He’d had the one thing that meant everything to me, and he’d treated her like shit. How anyone could cheat on a girl like Daisy Harris was beyond me. She was perfection.

My stomach churned as I stared at the empty hallway. I owed Daisy an apology. I’d been a complete dick to her, and now I really felt like shit. “I’ll be back in a sec,” I called out to Flynn as he returned to the living room to pack more boxes.

Once I reached the closet of the master bedroom, I leaned against the doorjamb as she lumped a pile of clothing into a box. Completely unaware of my presence, she picked up a dress and held it up to her petite body. My dick twitched on sight.

“You should keep that one,” I said as she turned her body from side to side in front of the full-length mirror.

Her bright-blue eyes struck mine in the reflection before indifference clouded her gaze. “Can you believe half these dresses still have the tags on?” She threw the dress onto a separate pile but refused to turn my way.

“Why didn’t you tell me what really happened that night?”

“You didn’t ask.” She picked up another dress and held it against her body.

She was right. I didn’t. I only cared that she was single and I could finally set the record straight. I never should have left after Jill and Cam died, but I was young and stupid and grieving too. I didn’t want to start a relationship like that. Her parents and Flynn had no idea how I felt about Daisy, and it would’ve looked like I was taking advantage of her.

So, I pissed off to Europe a week after the funeral. I had to put distance between us before I screwed everything up. Flynn and Daisy were the only family I had, and I wouldn’t jeopardize that until I knew, without a doubt, I could be the man she deserved. Only, by the time I returned, she was with Vance.

“I’m sorry, Daisy.”

“Why?” She shrugged. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Her nonchalance irritated me. “Didn’t I?”

“Maybe the part where you disappeared for two weeks,” she mumbled as she threw the dress into the box.

I stepped into the oversized closet. “You didn’t want me there.”

“I didn’t want you to leave either.”

“Daisy…”

“Look, I’m not an idiot, Ethan.” She began sorting through a pile of shoes. “I know it didn’t mean anything, so let’s pretend like it never happened, okay?”

My irritation morphed into anger. “That’s not going to work for me.”

“We were drunk, and emotional, and momentarily lost our minds. It happens.”

“I wasn’t drunk.”

She shook her head. “Then you must’ve been high.”

“I don’t touch that shit. You know that.”

“Yeah, I know.” She finally looked up at me as she exhaled. “Just don’t tell Flynn. He’ll kill us both.”

“I’m not afraid of your brother.”

“He has enough on his plate with the divorce. He doesn’t need anything else to worry about.”
