“Why are you here? Lucy mentioned that you’re not a student.”

Dani’s eyes widen. “You’ve been talking about me?”

“I have,” I say honestly. “I’m intrigued by you. You intrigue me. I was curious.”

“About what?”

“You.”

A puzzled expression crosses her face, and she subtly steps back again, this time looking over her shoulder first. “There’s nothing intriguing to know. Trust me.”

“Let’s agree to disagree, shall we? I’ve already found plenty.”

“Logan?” One of the girls calls out, drawing my attention away from Dani as she points toward the exit. They’re leaving.I'm supposed to go with them. Less than ten minutes ago, I wanted to go with them.Didn’t I?But now…the desire’s completely gone.

“I’m going to stay,” I call out. “I’ll see you later on.”

Both girls frown but walk away without question. Probably not really expecting anything more from a guy like me. When I turn back around, Dani’s already seated again and has her brush in the black paint. She hits it against the canvas haphazardly before getting a new brush and doing the same with red.Oh shit! Those are angry colors if ever I saw them.Did I piss her off?

I sit down at the empty spot beside her and start my own painting, side-eyeing her every few seconds as I go. I paint a tree, some grass, and a sun—some pretty decent preschool shit, I might add—and when I’ve finished, I wait patiently for Dani to finish hers. She spends another ten minutes splashing paint around, but when she’s done, I’m awed.

“Holy fuck.”

Dani jumps once again, her hand flying to her chest. “Jesus, Logan. I thought you left.”

“Nope. And I’m glad I didn’t. That’s really something.” But God, I hope it’s not about me,because it may be beautiful, but it’s angry or depressing or…I don’t even know.

“Ah…thank you,” she says, her perfect sun-kissed skin showing a hint of red in the cheeks.Fuck, she’s beautiful.

“Do you…always paint your feelings?” I ask a little hesitantly and grimace when she laughs.

“No, I don’t, actually. I paint songs.”

“Huh?”

She shows me her earbuds before passing me her phone, the Donnie Darko version of “Mad World” paused on the screen. My jaw drops. If I thought her picture was good before, now, it’s perfection. “Fuck, meee,” I blurt out, once again completely awed by her talent.

Dani startles a little before looking away. “Uh, um. What?”

“I saidfuck me. Meaningwow.”

“No, you practically growled it,” she says, a small disapproving pout in place.

I can’t stop myself from laughing out loud. “Well, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it to come out that way.”

“What way?”

“Whatever way you think it came out.”

“Right, okay. Good.”

I laugh again, patting her on the head. She swats me away, but her lips pull up into a suppressed smile. “Thank you…for the compliment.”

“You are very welcome. Want to see mine?”

“What?” she asks, her face a picture of confusion.

This girl.“You seriously didn’t even notice me sitting beside you?”
