“Good decision,” Olivia says.

“Don’t watch it,” Will adds.

“I can’t believe it flipped,” Juno mutters.

Elizabeth says, “It was awful. I know the Secret Service were afraid of another explosion or a sniper or something, but...”

“I wasn’t going to leave the kids,” James says.

Elizabeth looks at him. “Me neither.”

“I know. I wasn’t going to make you leave until they were out.”

Elizabeth nods as he talks. “I got Vivi out, but Everett’s buckle was stuck.”

“We had to cut him out,” James says, softly.

Tears are streaming down Elizabeth’s face. James puts his hand on her cheek and says, “You were really brave.”

“I didn’t feel brave.” She takes a shaky breath and then says, “The car seats saved their lives.”

He gives her a weak smile. “I know, and the seat belts saved ours. I don’t always wear my buckle in the motorcade when Vivi isn’t with me especially when we’re going that slow.”

“Did you call Brayden and Nichol’s families?” Elizabeth asks.

James’ jaw tightens. “I did. Hardest conversation of my life.”

She nods. “Do we know about the others yet?”

He shakes his head.

Brooklyn and Juno are nearly sobbing now. I watch Zadie put her head on Ethan’s chest and cry. Fuck. This is brutal.

The doctor walks in, and the rest of us stay completely quiet as he looks at Elizabeth’s foot and ankle. She winces as he touches it. James looks like he’s in as much pain watching her as she is.

After a minute, the doctor looks up and says, “We need to get x-rays.”

James nods to one of the Secret Service agents. “She needs to go the hospital for x-rays. Call ahead.”

After the agents leave, James wraps his arms around Elizabeth. “You should have told me.”

She looks up at him and says, “I honestly didn’t notice at first. I guess it was shock, and then I wanted to make sure the kids were settled. Vivi would have panicked if I’d left earlier.”

He puts his hand under her chin and tilts it up further so he can kiss her. When he pulls away, he says, “I’m sorry you’re hurt. I’m sorry this happened.”

She looks down at her foot. “It really isn’t that bad. I’ll be fine.”

There’s a bustle of activity and then one of the agents comes back in the room and says, “Marine One is ready.”

James stands and then picks up Elizabeth.

She starts to protest, “This isn’t necessary. Really, James...”

“I’m going to say this as lovingly as I can but shut the fuck up. I’m carrying you.”

She leans her head into him and chuckles softly. “Fine.”

Once they leave, Will drags his hand over his face. “Honestly, both of them should probably get checked out again at the hospital. I’m going to text James.”
