Chapter Sixty-Two

Juno

When I come back frommy run, Bode is asleep on the couch, and Eli is watching a soccer game.

“I’m going to shower,” I whisper. Eli nods and then checks his watch. “I have a dinner meeting. Will you be here this evening?”

“Yeah,” I whisper.

He stands up. “I’ll probably be gone when you get out of the shower.”

“Okay, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on Bode.”

“Thanks,” he says.

I go upstairs and take a shower. When I come back downstairs, Bode is awake. The television is off. Eli is gone.

“Hey,” I say.

He looks nervous.

“Hey,” he responds. “How was your run?”

I sit down across from him. “Fine. How are you feeling?”

“A little sore, but otherwise fine,” he answers.

My throat feels dries so I jump up. “I’m getting water. Need anything?”

He just shakes his head. When I come back, he looks even more nervous than before.

“You came to the hospital?” he says after the silence becomes unbearable.

My eyebrow arches. “You don’t remember?”

He shakes his head. “No. I guess they had me really drugged up.”

I laugh. “They did, indeed.”

He swallows and then says, “Eli told me that I was saying crazy things.”

I laugh again.

“Did I say anything to you?” He’s nervously studying my face.

My heart starts pounding. If he didn’t remember saying any of those things, maybe they weren’t true.

“What did I say?” he asks.

“It doesn’t matter,” I say, darting my eyes away.

“Juno.” His voice is so firm it startles me. “Tell me what I said.”

“It’s not important.”

“It is. Tell me.”
