He paused a moment before he said, “I have a pretty good idea, yeah.”

“Enlighten me.”

“Come on, Sutton.”

“Come on, what?” I demanded.

“You’re not stupid. You were having a nightmare about killing someone. You’ve been burying it. But when you sleep, you can’t control what you dream about. Am I right?”

I rubbed the back of my neck. My muscles were tight. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“We’re talking about it.”

“Talking about it won’t change what happened,” I said.

“Burying it won’t make it go away.”

“Oh, you’re an expert, huh?” I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. “What am I supposed to do? Talk about all my trauma, get into the nitty gritty about what a shitty human I am?”

“Sutton, it was self-defense—”

“I know that.”

“But a man died,” he said, his voice suddenly quiet. “Self-defense or not, that’s still going to fuck with you.”

“Why, though?” I asked, my voice cracking. I cleared my throat. “He was evil. I shouldn’t feel bad about what I’ve done.”

“Howdoyou feel about it?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I refuse to let myself think about it.”

“If you don’t deal with this, the nightmares are gonna get worse.”

“Yeah, but there’s no guarantee the nightmares will go away, even if I confront this.”

Viper stood. “Get up.”

“Why?”

“Just, get up.” He reached a hand down for me to take.

I seized it and he hauled me to my feet.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

He didn’t reply as he marched me into the bathroom. He flipped on the light.

“Viper—”

He gripped my hips and turned me around so that I faced the mirror. My eyes were wide in my pale face and my hair was a tangled mess. He loomed behind me.

“It wasn’t your fault,” he said.

My gaze met his in the glass. “I know that.”

“Then say it. Look yourself in the eye and say it.”

I took a deep breath. “It wasn’t my fault.”
