“You did nothing wrong.”

My mouth clamped shut.

“Say it,” he commanded.

With a sigh, I said, “I did nothing wrong.”

“You defended yourself.”

“I defended myself.”

“You were not a victim.”

“I was not a victim.”

“You are strong.”

A bubble of emotion surged up my throat. “I am strong,” I croaked.

“This will not define you.”

“This will not define me.”

“Bad shit happens all the time.”

“Bad shit happens all the time.”

He placed his hands on my shoulders. “You are not alone.”

“I am not alone,” I whispered.

“Louder.”

“I am not alone.”

“Again.”

“I am not alone.”

Something about saying it for the third time broke the dam holding back all the emotion walled within me, and it came flooding out.

I clutched the counter and let the tears stream down my cheeks. When I realized Viper was witnessing my meltdown, I tried to turn away.

“No,” he said gruffly. “Let it out. I’m here for you. You’re not alone.”

I cried harder.

He pulled me to his chest and held me. He stroked my hair and cradled me in his arms.

“Guess I’m not such a badass now,” I muttered. “Am I?”

“You’re still a badass. And in the long run you’ll be better for all this. Trust me.”

I nodded and a hiccough escaped me lips. I wiped my cheeks and took a few minutes to let my breaths even out.

“Come on. Let’s get back to bed.”

Once we were settled and the lamp was off, I said, “Viper?”
