“Yeah?”

“Thanks for that.”

“You’re welcome.”

We were both silent for a few minutes when I asked, “Viper?”

“Yeah?”

“Can we act like my nightmare never happened?”

He paused. “It wasn’t the first nightmare you’ve had, Sutton.”

“No?”

“No.”

I swallowed, hating that Viper had seen me vulnerable and I hadn’t even known about it.

“I won’t mention it again,” he said.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

It took me a while, but eventually I fell back asleep.

My phone rang early the next morning. With a groan, I launched myself over Viper to grab it. It slipped through my fingers and clattered to the floor. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop the ringing.

“Fuck, careful,” Viper growled as I almost kneed him between the legs.

I hit the floor and picked up my screaming phone, quickly silencing it.

“Who the hell is calling this early?” he demanded.

“Spam,” I lied. I climbed off the floor and padded into the bathroom. I quickly turned my phone off and then did my business. Just as I was about to hop into the shower, Viper came into the bathroom and shut the door.

His boxers were tented and his morning wood was raging.

I stepped into the steam and slid the curtain shut. I closed my eyes and turned my face up to the shower spray.

“You’ve been getting a lot of spam calls.” The sound of the curtain gliding along the metal rod was loud in my ears. I opened my eyes and rotated slowly so I didn’t slip and then gave him the water.

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Why are you lying to me?”

I wrapped my arms around my body, as if concealing my nudity also concealed my vulnerability. After him comforting me through my nightmare, I was feeling exposed and raw. “I’m not lying. It really was a spam caller.”

“Do you think I’m stupid, or just not observant? The way you leapt from the bed and reached for your phone…”

“It’s early in the morning,” I said. “I wasn’t expecting it to ring.”

“Why wasn’t it on silent?” he asked, leaning forward and pressing his forearm to the wall.

He towered over me. He was so big that even when he was doing nothing more than standing there, he was intimidating. He didn’t have to try, he just was.

“Sutton? Why wasn’t your phone on silent even though you just worked a night shift at the bar?”

“I forgot,” I defended. “And your phone is never on silent.”
