“When?” Willa demanded.

“This afternoon,” I said with a grimace. “Tank, I don’t think I can rock the bald look.” I gently removed his hand from my hair. He curled his little fingers around mine and my heart melted.

Wait, no. That wasn’t my heart melting. That was one of my ovaries getting ready to drop an egg for Viper to fertilize.

“And you said yes, didn’t you?” Rach asked. She was sitting in the recliner with Cash asleep on her lap, resting in the cradle of her thighs.

“Yeah, I said yes.”

“That’ll be good for you guys,” Joni said. “Some privacy. Some space.”

Mia nodded. “Definitely.”

“Wait, you don’t think I’m crazy?” I asked in shock.

“That’s kind of a different question, isn’t it?” Willa teased.

“This world moves pretty fast,” Mia said. “If you want to be part of it, you kinda have to buckle up and go along for the ride.”

“I think it’s sweet,” Allison said. “That you guys are making plans.”

She didn’t say what we were all thinking. We were making plans, but what happened if they changed…

I shoved thoughts of Viper dying in a bloody battle with the cartel out of my brain. It was too awful to contemplate, so I simply refused to do it.

Tank let go of my hand and then patted my breast.

“Sorry, kid, I don’t have what you’re looking for,” I said. “Here, Mama, your son is hungry.”

“When is he not?” Allison asked as she scooped her son into her arms. “I think I’ll say good night, then. I need to bathe him before he nurses and then I can put him to bed.”

“Night,” I called.

“She has a good idea,” Rach said. “Babies are cute but they’re hell on your sleep.”

“So much truth to that,” Joni said.

Doc rose from her seat. “I think I’ll go snuggle up next to Boxer and Monk and finish the movie.”

Rach lifted her son in her arms and headed out of the living room, Doc behind her.

“I’m standing, right?” Joni asked.

“Just like I’m standing,” Mia remarked with a smile.

“On the count of three?”

“One, two, three,” Mia said.

Neither of them moved.

I walked over to Mia and held out my hands. She grasped them and stood up. “Thank you. I’d never have made it otherwise.”

“Do me,” Joni said.

I helped her rise.

“Uh-oh,” I murmured.
