“Then what’s the news?” Rach asked.

“I’m selling Shelly’s.”

Silence descended upon the room.

“But, why?” I finally asked. I opened the bottle of antibiotics and fished around for a pill.

“I decided I wanted a fresh start. So, I’m selling the building and opening a new bar.”

Brooklyn suddenly burst into tears.

“What’s wrong?” Willa asked.

“Everything’s changing,” Brooklyn said, swiping at her eyes. “And I don’t want it to.”

“It’s just a bar,” Mia said with a smile as she went to sit by Brooklyn. “It’s going to be okay.”

“But I never got to really enjoy it because I’m pregnant!” Brooklyn wailed. “And now you’re selling it!”

I couldn’t help it. A giggle started up my throat and escaped my mouth. Suddenly, I was laughing so hard I was bent over in half.

Brooklyn looked at me in horror and then suddenly started to laugh with me. Soon, the room was filled with laughter.

“Oh, man.” I wiped the tears away from my face. “I needed that so much.”

“Me too,” Darcy admitted with a soft smile.

“You’ll be able to drink at the new bar,” Mia said.

“What kind of bar will it be?” Joni asked. “Something similar to Shelly’s?”

“I don’t know,” Mia admitted.

“Well, it’s official. I’ll have to find a new job. Damn,” I muttered. “I really liked working for you.”

“Then work for me in the new place,” Mia said with a smile. “I still think you’d make a great bar manager.”

“Done and done,” I said eagerly.

“See? Not all change is bad,” Mia said.

A cell phone rang. It was Darcy’s.

She put the phone to her ear. “Hello? Yes.” She paused. “He didwhat? Yeah, okay. I’ll be right there.” Darcy hung up her phone and shoved it back into her purse. She grabbed it and then hopped off the stool. “Sorry, I can’t stay. That was the soccer camp. Cam just got into a fight. I have to pick him up.”

“Oh damn,” Mia said softy.

Darcy nodded as she clenched her jaw. “See you guys later.”

Once she was gone, I looked at Rach. “How’s she doing? Really?”

Rach shrugged. “Hanging in there. One day at a time, I guess.”

I waited for her to say more, but I quickly realized she wouldn’t. She was keeping my confidence. I didn’t know if that was good or bad.

“So, Rach,” Joni said.

“So, Joni,” Rach parroted.
