We were in Hemingway for the week of Damien and Alex’s wedding, staying at Nathan’s dad’s place. Nathan and his other siblings had made fun of Damien’s snail-like pace in proposing to Alex and then planning the wedding. Neither he nor Alex felt any urgency in getting married—they already lived together and did all the things that married people do.

And they didn’t have an estate to uphold.

But after a year of jokes, they finally decided on a date and place. And of course, Mack was overseeing everything.

As I was putting the back on my earring, Nathan sidled up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. Kissing my neck, he murmured, “We could blame it on you, you know. It’s summer, and you’re in the third trimester of your pregnancy…maybe you just move naturally slower so things take longer.”

I glared at him through the mirror. “Are you calling me fat and unwieldy?”

His eyes widened, and I couldn’t tell if he was truly scared, or if he was just playing the part. “I would never call you fat,” he said.

“But you would call me unwieldy?”

“Well, would you look at the time?” He stepped back and cleared his throat, pretending to look at his watch. “We’d better go, or we’ll be late. And Mack will kill us.”

Though I pursed my lips at his deflection, I turned and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. “I’m choosing to ignore your insult,” I said.

“Because you love me.”

“Because I don’t want our son to grow up without his father.”

That elicited a chuckle from my husband. “I love you, you know that?”

I smiled up at him, admiring the gray that was starting at his temples and that was weaved throughout his beard, and the laugh lines in the corners of his eyes. If someone had told me ten, five, even three years ago that I would be married to Nathan Hemingway, the Prince Charming of our town, I would’ve laughed in their face. But here I was, with the man of my dreams, in the most unexpected of ways—through a marriage contract.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

THE END
