“Well…just that you weren’t gonna be able to go to the prom.”

“True story,” I said as we approached the edge of the property. She had to know by now where we were headed. “I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a real prom. But I’m hoping this will suffice.”

She stopped, her hand squeezing mine in a vice grip as her eyes widened.

CHAPTER 34

Grace

Speechless didn’t even come close to how I felt. Strands of big bulb lights were strung from the top of the treehouse down to the trees all the way around forming a big top, circus-like tent made up solely of lights.Thousandsof lights. Soft music played from speakers inside the treehouse. I looked to Seren. “You did all of this for me?”

“Well, yeah.Ididn’t need a prom.”

“It’s beautiful,” I said, taking in the transformed area that was so much better than any prom would’ve been. “Oh, we are so posting pictures of this.”

“Why?”

“Because Kiki is gonna be so pissed.”

He pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around me so all I could do was look up into his eyes. “I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks but you.” His lips were on mine before I could respond. His tongue pushed between my lips, and our tongues tangled in a delicious dance.

I pulled out of the kiss first, knowing if our night started this hot and heavy, we weren’t getting through a single dance. “So, what do we do at a Seren prom?”

“You sure you want to know?”

I laughed. “Keep it clean.”

He balked. “With you looking this hot, not a chance.”

Heat pulsed in my cheeks, spreading to the rest of my body.

He took my hand and led me to the area beneath the treehouse. He spun me around slowly before slipping his arm around my waist and swaying us to the slow music. My heartbeat sped up as he buried his nose in my hair. I’d never been so turned on by another human being in my life. But Seren brought that out of me. And we were all alone out there. And there was music and lights and this take-me-right-now-or-I’ll-die-feeling pulsing through my body.

“Why do you like me?” Seren asked as we danced.

“Why do you likeme?”

“You didn’t answer my question,” he said, and I knew he was purposely avoiding looking at me when he asked.

It was a tough question to answer. He was such a mystery. But at the same time such an open book when it came to me. “You trust me,” I offered.

Silence passed between us as we continued to dance beneath the lights.

“Is that it?” he asked, disappointment evident in his tone.

“You gave me my own prom,” I said.

“Because I got suspended,” he countered.

“You’re passionate about what you believe in,” I said, knowing his analysis ofPride and Prejudicetouched the surface of his passion for what he knew to be right. Just like his allegations about his mother. Though crazy, he wholeheartedly believed them and would convince you he was right. And, knowing he wanted full honesty from me—since he had the nerve to ask the question in the first place—I admitted, “You make me feel things I’ve never felt before.”

“Like?” he pried.

“Like…extreme rage.”

His head hitched back, his eyes meeting mine.

“But then extreme happiness, too.”
