Either way, Lisa knew one thing for sure—Langston had awakened something inside her, something that hadn’t been there before when it came to relationships, and she was determined to explore it.

No matter the consequences.

“What wereyou saying about Dad, Mom?” Lisa asked, turning her attention away from her thoughts and back to her mother. Her mother laughed.

“I was saying he wants to take us for dinner this Saturday—to celebrate your recent promotion.”

Lisa frowned. “Promotion?”

“Yes. Your solo performance.”

Laughter fell from Lisa. “Oh.” She frowned again. “I wouldn’t call that a promotion. I’m not going solo. It was just a one-time thing.”

“Don’t tell him that.”

“Why?”

Mrs. Sharpton lowered her voice as if her husband was around to hear. “He thinks you would be a better solo performer.”

Lisa’s eyes widened. “He’s never said that to me before. Why does he think that?”

“Well, he’s your father and wants to see you in the spotlight. He thinks…”

Lisa leaned her head as if encouraging her mother to finish.

“He thinks you get lost in the background sometimes and he wants you to show the world what you’re really capable of.”

Lisa’s groan emerged from her throat, full of deep, frustrated resignation.

“I don’t understand why he’s making this a thing again. I’ve told him that I operate better in a group setting. The girls bring out the best of my talents. It’s very frustrating that he doesn’t think so.”

“It’s not that he doesn’t think you’re great. Of course, he does—he just wants you to sing lead.”

“And yet, he was nowhere to be found for my solo performance.”

“He was out of town on assignment.”

“Yeah, yeah, yadda, yadda.”

Mrs. Sharpton frowned. “Honey, don’t take what your dad says the hard way. He only wants what’s best for you.”

“Sure, sure.”

“You know what? Forget I said anything.”

“And how am I supposed to do that?”

“I’ll change the subject. I have great news. My hair is growing again! The hair serum you told me about works like a charm.”

Lisa’s face lit up as she looked at her mother’s ponytail updo. “Iknewyour ponytail looked fuller!”

“It is, and I hope it continues to grow as long as your father stops tugging on it.”

Lisa’s face dropped into a scowl. “Ew?”

Mrs. Sharpton glanced at her daughter. “What?”
