“Ican’t believe you’re letting me drive your car.”

Lisa laughed and glanced at Langston in the passenger seat with his hands behind his head, his seat leaned back, blindfolded, with a smirk on his face.

“Why? Should I be worried?”

“No. That’s not what I meant. It’s just most men wouldn’t let anyone—never mind a woman—drive their precious car. Especially a luxury vehicle, and I know this model is not on the streets yet.”

“How else were you supposed to get me to this surprise destination?”

“You have a point. I just didn’t think about it. Did you?”

“I consider everything before I make a move.”

“That’s right, because you’re a government official. I imagine you must be tactical most times.”

“It’s a force of habit.”

“Hmmmm...” Lisa turned a corner and drove onto the freeway. “I wonder what it’s like having to think intelligently and with utmost care every second of your life. Sounds intense. I’d be too afraid to make a mistake.”

“No, you wouldn’t.”

“Stick around me long enough, and you’ll see I’m pretty goofy.”

Dark laughter bellowed from his gut. “We all have our quirks. But if you were a government officer, you would have trained for years. That training would ensure you possessed the necessary skills to navigate your life, as you say, tactically without thought. It would come naturally.”

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

The JXL Noregea cruised effortlessly, and Lisa switched lanes and pressed the pedal.

“Easy, girl.”

Tinkling laughter rolled from her tongue. “I’m only going...” Her eyes widened when she checked the speedometer. Eighty-five. “Shit.” She pulled her foot back. “How the hell am I going so fast?”

Langston chuckled. “She’s a sports car.”

“I’ve driven sports cars before and I’ve never had one go from forty-five to eighty-five with a mere press of the pedal.”

“As you said before, she’s a newer model.”

“How’d you know I was speeding?”

“I’ve danced with this car enough to know its acceleration and gear shifts.”

“So when you get to know something, you just remember what happens, how things work, and become the perfect mate to it?”

Langston wondered if they were still talking about vehicles. Either way, he answered earnestly. “I try. It doesn’t always pan out for me, unfortunately.”

Lisa glanced at him, noticing the serious tone and shift in expression on his face. She realized then how the topic had altered unintentionally, and that was the first time Langston had come close to speaking about what happened with his ex.

She cleared her throat. “I’ve got to get a Radius car.”

Radius was a luxury sports car company owned and operated by Langston’s father—Fredrick Clark.

“When you’re ready to shop for one, let me know.”

“Do I get a discount?” she teased.
