“No.” His gaze carried over her, and she shivered. “There’s been an emergency, and I’d like to keep you guarded for a while if you don’t mind.”

Her brows arched, eyes widening. “Okay.”

She let him in and gave him a blanket in case he wanted to stretch out on the couch.

“Please, don’t mind me. Get some rest.”

They staredat each other from across the living room.

It was three a.m., and though she needed to rest, sleep eluded her when she returned to her bedroom. As she lay in bed thinking about the handsome man in her living room, her mind conjured ideas of what he was like personally.

She’d texted her bandmates to make sure they were okay. Apparently, they were all being guarded, but Lisa never got a chance to question Langston further as she drifted off to sleep. When she’d awakened, he was gone but the security detail he’d put on her previously was back outside.

Lisa quickly shook off her thoughts, realizing she was getting distracted again. She needed to focus on the tennis game; winning this match was her top priority.

Tina served the ball toward Lisa’s left side, and Lisa dove to try and reach it. But she was just a second too late, and the ball sailed past her, landing inside the court.

“Game point,” Tina said, a smug smile on her face.

Lisa gritted her teeth, determination filling her veins. She wasn’t going to let Tina win that easily.

With renewed focus, Lisa served the ball with all her might. It sailed across the court, bouncing once before Tina could reposition her swing.

“Ah!” she yelled but missed.

Lisa shouted, “Tie!”

Breathless and sweaty, Lisa walked over to the side of the court to take a break. As she wiped her face with a towel, her thoughts drifted back to Langston. The man was a walking embodiment of sex appeal, and he had been on Lisa’s mind for weeks now. She tried to push him out of her thoughts, but he kept creeping back like a persistent itch.

She took a sip of water and looked up to find Tina staring at her with a concerned expression.

“Are you all right?” Tina asked, her tone softening.

Lisa sighed. “I’m sorry. I keep thinking about him.”

“Hmmm, would him be Langston?”

Lisa bit her lip. “Yes.”

“When was the last time you spoke to him?”

Lisa smiled up at Tina and straightened her posture. “He came to my house to guard me during that fiasco because of the Cupid Killer. He called me a few times to see if I was okay.” She wiped the sweat off her forehead with the hand towel. “I haven’t spoken to him since.”

“You like him, yes?”

“I do. He seems...” Lisa sighed. “Okay, this might sound crazy but hear me out. He used to appear warm and friendly whenever we saw him, remember? In the papers or on television. Then over the last few months, he’s been withdrawn, a bit icy. And we know he and his girlfriend broke up.”

She held up a finger. “But I feel like I’ve experienced some of that warmth in spurts. Like, when we were at Malik’s wedding and then at Atlas,” she smiled, remembering when she’d rode on the back of his BMW motorcycle after they left the club. “It was nice getting to know him in that brief personal space, although he was mostly silent.”

“You should call him.”

Lisa’s brown eyes widened, and her lips spread into a smile. “You think so?”

Tina laughed, running her fingers through her ponytail. “I’m not quite sure, but if you want to befriend him, you have to communicate. And let’s be honest, you’re not the type to wait him out. You’re a get-the-ball-rolling type of woman.”

Lisa’s face brightened further. “Yeaaaah, I am.” Her smile dropped. “But what if it’s a mistake?”

“Why would it be?”
