“I can’t wait. This place really does feel like home.” Her smile fades a little and she glances down at her hands in her lap. “I just wish my parents were here.”

I nod and shoot her a commiserating smile. But inside I know that I can change whoever set up our future and I intend to make sure she gets everything she needs. Even if it means I have to beg her father to come here.

SERENITY

My eyes widen and search around the interior of the little diner with the ice cream counter in the corner.

“I thought we were going to get ice cream?”

“We are. But you need to keep your strength up and so do I. So we’re going to get something a bit more filling too.”

Nodding my head, I lift the menu and study the offerings as seriously as if I’m ordering up my next lifetime.

My eyes stop when I run across the cherry cheesecake ice cream and I moan. “That sounds so good.”

Saar grimaces across from me. “So do you, but for the sake of my sanity can you not do that in here?”

I giggle and look at the main dish offerings on the menu, stopping when I see the homemade mac and cheese. I love mac and cheese.

When the waitress in the old-fashioned blue uniform dress with a matching white apron comes up to us, I grin. “This place is great.” There’s a line of people at the juke box, picking music.

Saar nods across from me and smiles when the waitress appears in front of us. She’s young and pretty. Long, brown hair and doe-like brown eyes. Dainty and delicate.

She makes me feel like a giant. I’m only five foot five so this is new.

Saar smiles at her as she nervously eyes up the patrons. I see an argument start to break out and the mens’ eyes start to glow golden in the dim light.

She flinches and Saar touches her hand quickly, backing off when I growl at him. He shoots me a startled look but I can see that he doesn’t mind my possessive side. My dragon doesn’t want anyone touching him.

“Are you new here? I’ve never seen you before.”

“Yeah. I’m here visiting my cousin. She married a guy and moved here. I kinda like it so I thought I might get a job and see how it goes.”

Saar frowns. “And your cousin is like you?”

I shoot him a stern glare. She’s human. We can both smell it on her. If she doesn’t know what this place is, it could get mighty embarrassing.

“Yeah. She married this guy that’s a little weird but he treats her nice. He said that he has a lot of family around here so he moved her back here. She’s the only family I have left so I followed her. My name’s Jemma.”

I nod my head but inside I’m shocked. The girl takes our order and moves away to hand it to the cook who shoves it onto a rotating holder.

I reach out my hand and hold his, uncaring who sees us. “I like this town. It looks so quaint and sweet.”

He grimaces. “Don’t let Augustus hear you say that.”

“Who is Augustus?”

“He’s one of our residents. A bear shifter that has a temper so bad that half the time he gets locked up just for breathing.”

“And he would be mad to hear that this place is sweet?”

He nods his head, chuckling darkly. “Most of our residents don’t necessarily deal in sweet.”

A big man walks in the door, his jaw covered in scruff. He’s lean and slender but has well-defined muscles. His jeans cling to thick thighs and his button-down shirt is practically painted on his big biceps and chest. There’s a silver star on his chest and I groan.

“Who is that man?”

Saar glances over and grins and waves at the man. “That is our sheriff. Lobo Canton. He’s a good guy.”
