I reach the airport and smirk when I see her outside the building, looking for a taxi.

I jerk the truck to a stop and race to her. “Where the hell do you think you’re going, Sassy? You can’t leave me. You’re mine now.”

She runs to me and throws her arms around me, sobbing hysterically. “I don’t know what I was thinking! I just panicked and I couldn’t make myself stay. But as soon as I got here I knew I made a mistake. I can’t leave you.”

Her body shivers in my arms and I sigh, holding her tightly. Every breath on my skin settles my soul.

I lift her chin and smile when I see her eyes swimming with tears. “You look so fucking beautiful. I can’t believe you get more beautiful every time I look at you but you do. I love you, Sassy. You’re my one. And believe me. If you had got on that plane I would have followed you. Found you and dragged you back to me.”

“I got a call from the attorney for Tex, one of my stepfathers. He left me his ranch. I need to go sign the papers. And sell it or…”. Her head lifts. “Would you want to move there with me?”

“I would . I thought you were just leaving me.”

“Nope. But I didn’t want to leave you at all. I couldn’t. I love you. Would you come with me?”

“Absolutely. Let’s go.”

She giggles at the honks and swearing. “I think you need to park the truck. Heather will kill you if you get her truck towed.”

I run over and nod to the people glaring at me. “She loves me!” I holler.

“Great!” One man yells. “Get the hell out of the way!”

I jump in the truck and park it. Then I run back into the airport and we run to the gate, laughing like idiots.

“I don’t have a ticket!” I say.

“We’ll buy one online. Come on!” She hollers and I follow her, knowing that this is what I will always do. Follow my Sassy wherever she goes.

And we’ll raise our kids on this ranch that she used to love. We’ll make love and dance in the moonlight.

And we’ll come home to each other and fall asleep in each other’s arms. Right where we were always destined to be.

I hold her hand as the plane revs up and we shoot down the runway. “I love you so much, Sassy. I want it all with you.”

“I want it all with you too.”

I can see that she’s still worried about something and I think I know what it is. But although I know what’s been said about her mom, I also know that my Sassy is mine. And she’s not her mother’s daughter. She’s her own woman. My woman. Forever.

Epilogue: Steel

“Hey, baby? Where you at?”

“Back here, sexy!” She hollers. I cringe when she says it and follow her voice to the stall where Tex’s buckskin horse placidly munches at his hay while she curries his already gleaming coat.

“I’ve told you not to call me that,” I huff, not really meaning it. She can call me whatever the hell she wants to call me.

“And I told you not to call me baby. It’s almost as bad as princess.” Her muttered complaints make me smile.

“Baby, you know I love to call you that.”

“Yeah, but I don’t like it.”

I grunt and wait until she finishes up with Mascot and carefully closes the stall behind her. I push up against her until she’s trapped against the door. I turn her around and push my hips into hers. Her mouth drops open.

“Are you always hard?” She gasps.

I can’t help the devilish smirk I give her. “Only when I’m around you.”
