“I bought you a gift,”

I looked at him expectedly to open it up. I loved gifts.

Antonio’s lips twitched, and he opened the box for me to see what was inside. The second I saw the necklace and the matching earrings, I lost my breath. My soul left my body at that exact moment. It was a diamond necklace with heart-shaped rubies.

It was the necklace from Pretty Woman.

“How did you know?” I asked. He, of course, knew I enjoyed romantic movies a lot, but this was my favorite piece of jewelry in the whole entire world. I always dreamed of someone buying me this, and Antonio did.

This was a dream.

His lips twitched again like he was holding back a huge smile. I wished he didn’t. “I heard you telling Apollo about it.”

I searched my brain but couldn’t remember though it was highly possible. I talked to our dog a lot. I knew I needed to learn sign fast so I could actually imagine him understanding me.

The fact that Antonio listened me talking to him and bought the damn thing was very impressive. I shouldn’t have been so shocked since he was good at being impressive, but I still did.

“Can you put it on me?” I asked without even trying to hide my excitement.

“Of course,” Antonio said and put both the necklace and the matching earrings to me.

I ran to the mirror and inspected the necklace. It was out of my dreams, and it went so well with the dress he chose for me. I looked so beautiful.

Antonio came up behind me and leaned down to kiss my neck, just above where the necklace was sitting. “Beautiful,” he murmured, looking at me through the mirror and my insides filled with warmth.

He was weird, and he had many things he couldn’t give me. He was unstable and was so much work. Everybody was skeptical about my choice. No one understood what I saw in him. Yet none of them knew these little moments where he made me feel like I had the best marriage in the world despite anything.

We reached the party after Sal and Mia. When Mia and I saw each other, we hugged. “You look so pretty!” I said, looking at her light blue cocktail dress. Mia and I were so much into fashion. Since she was also an artist, she had a great eye.

“You too,” she answered and eyed my necklace. “This is so you.”

I giggled. “It is the necklace from Pretty Woman. Antonio bought it as a gift for me.”

Mia looked at her brother and lifted one dark eyebrow. “I didn’t know you were this romantic, Tony.”

Antonio grunted low. “Don’t start, Pup.”

Mia rolled her eyes, and Sal looked down at her with amusement. The same amusement was also plastered on my face.

I looked at Antonio. “Oh, I forgot you hate Tony too. I will use it.”

He looked at me for a while and sighed. “Honestly, Tony is better than Buttercup.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at that. Mia also joined me. She found my nicknames for Antonio so funny. When I saw even Salvatore had a little smile on his face, I felt so at ease. I felt accepted by his family. I was still silently thinking they were to blame for Antonio’s condition, but that didn’t mean I wanted to be on bad terms with them. I had no plan on confronting them about it. I just wanted to help Antonio feel. If I could do that, it would be more than enough for me.

It was more business than fun, but it didn’t bother me. I already knew I was supposed to be a trophy wife for tonight. Honestly, I felt happy just because I was with Antonio. Also, I was hoping we could dance at one point. We hadn’t danced since our wedding, and it was such a shame.

We mostly had quick chats with people. I had to meet so many people that my brain was about to explode with all the names I had to memorize. Mia, on the other hand, was perfect. There was not one person she didn’t know. It was almost like she was made for this.

On another thought, maybe she really was. The best thing a girl could do was seen as marriage material in our circle, and Mia told me she was promised to Salvatore at a very young age. She was meant to be the wife of a Capo. I was not like her at all, but I was still kind and welcoming to everyone we met. I was always good at making people like me, so I hoped I would not have any problem.

My mask only got damaged while we were talking with the Senator.

“Congratulations on the wedding,” he said to us with a polite smile. “Unfortunately, I was not able to attend because it was in New York.” I was not sure if he would have attended it anyway.

After we both thanked him, he looked at Antonio in a skeptical way. “I never thought you would marry, Mr. Mazzoni. It happened rather quickly.”

To that, Antonio’s hand on my hip tensed, and he pressed me a little more to him. “When you fall in love, there is no need to wait.”
