“With you coming back, Porter is going to expand the program, so that means more equipment and more surgeries. Things look really good for the unit.”

We talked for an hour about work while we ate our food, and when we were finished, I sat back, my second beer in hand and exhaled, happy to feel so positive about my new colleague.

Dane seemed like a first-rate surgeon and generally nice person. He smiled easily, laughed often, and yet, clearly was serious about his work. I could see the looks he was getting from the young women in the restaurant bar, and had to admit he was very good looking, with a square jaw, dark eyebrows and a good build, which was clear underneath the white shirt.

“I know you were given a really hard time when you were let go by the former administration,” he said, and leaned forward. “Luckily, Porter got in. He hired me, someone with several of the same private interests as you.”

“Oh?” I leaned forward, amused at the tone of his voice, which was conspiratorial. “Tell me more.”

“Let’s just say that we know people in common.”

“Such as?”

“Lara,” Dane said. He smiled. “She trained me, too.”

I laughed at that. “Did she know this all along?”

“Yes, but I only recently gave her permission to admit it. I saw what happened to you, and believe me, I don’t want the same happening to me. Luckily, Porter is a decent guy, and very accepting of alternate lifestyles, as long as it’s safe, sane and consensual.”

“That should be all that matters,” I said, and took a long sip of my beer. “So, do you frequent The Club? Lara told me about it.”

“Yes, in fact. If you weren’t leaving so soon, I would have invited you to come for a drink and see the place. When you come back, we’ll have to go.”

I smiled, amused that I had a colleague who shared more than my love of surgery.

If so, it would be a very interesting year…

I spentthe next hour and half with Dane, discussing the lifestyle, and my experiences in it. I was glad to meet another Dom who shared so many interests. Other than his very outgoing temperament, we could be clones. He was much more relaxed about his interest than I had been, but it was a new world and perhaps people were becoming more tolerant over the past decade. I hoped so. As long as it was safe, sane and consensual — and legal, I thought people should be free to indulge their fantasies.

“When you get back, bring your wife to The Club. Take a look around. You may be interested in participating. If Lara is a friend, you’re a shoo-in for membership.”

“I will.”

I had more to worry about for the time being than membership at The Club but would keep it in mind and see what Kate thought. Once we were settled and felt able, I’d approach Lara and see if she could get us in for a visit. Dane seemed like a seriously decent man, but I’d wait until I spoke more with Lara before I became too friendly with him. If she gave him the green light, I’d be happy to go to The Club with him.

I texted George and soon, he drove up and whisked me back to 8thAvenue, safe and sound.

The next day,I took the limo to Liam at Brenda’s place, and listened to him talk about his time in New York and how they had been looking all over Brooklyn for a new place to live.

Chris and Maureen were out, so I had a couple of hours with just Liam and me to spend together. We decided to take a walk along the waterfront and take in the nice day. I would be leaving for Southampton later in the day but wanted a good couple of hours with Liam before I left.

“Are you glad that you’ll be able to live here with your Mom and with Chris?”

He nodded. “I wish we could all live together in a big house so I wouldn’t have to go back and forth.”

“Think of it this way — you get two bedrooms, two sets of toys, and clothes. One for school days, and one for weekends.”

“Which will I get with you?”

“That’s up to a judge to decide. But you’ll get to stay with both of us.”

“I want to be with Sophie during the week,” Liam said. “We could go to the same school, and I could protect her. I could stay with Mom and Chris on weekends.”

I smiled to myself, glad that he felt like a big brother to her. “If that’s what you want, you can tell the Judge and let him know you want to be with your sister.”
