Then,I sent it off, smiling to myself, eager to see what she sent me in response.

CHAPTERTHREE

Isat at my father’s bedside and watched him sleep.

In the other room, Elaine played with Sophia, keeping her busy so I could spend some time with my father. He was getting better but the medication he was on for his infection made him drowsier than usual.

My cell chimed and so I removed it from my pocket and saw that I had several messages.

I held my cell in my hand and watched the video Drake sent me which arrived while I was out with Sophie and Alyssa looking at giraffes. The video was of him and the boys from Mersey practicing a new song. It was one I hadn’t heard before — some old Brit Invasion that wasn’t in their usual repertoire.

Their performance was a bit rough, but still sounded good. Drake’s voice was flexible enough that he could handle the lyrics, even though the song had a wide range. He also had to put more emotion in it than usual, due to the original. The 80s were notorious for emo music.

I listened to the original song, and then to the band’s rendition, and was impressed, all things considered. Especially since this was the first time the band had actually practiced it.

I sent him a text, figuring that he would possibly be in meetings, but might have time to read it in between them.

KATE: Wow — you guys did a great job capturing the tone of the song. Bravo!

I sent the text and waited, wondering what Drake was doing.

DRAKE: Thanks. I’m sitting in the waiting room, getting ready to meet with Lara. We did pretty good, considering how complex the song is and how we were lacking a key ingredient, besides actual talent — a saxophone! Ken is going to work on a friend, see if we can get him to join us for a few sets.

KATE: You did well. Impressive. I miss you…

DRAKE: I miss you, too. How’s Dad?

KATE: The same. Medication making him drowsier than usual. Doctor says he should be feeling much better in a few days.

DRAKE: I’m sorry I’m not there with you. I just had to come now.

KATE: I know. I have Elaine here and Michael is being really helpful. We’ll be fine. Sophie misses you. She keeps asking where you are.

DRAKE: I’ll Skype with you two tomorrow, once my meeting is over. How does that sound?

KATE: Sounds good. Have a good meeting. Let’s hope everything works out.

DRAKE: I love you.

KATE: I love you, too.

I re-read the thread and then put my cell away. Beside me on the bed, my father stirred, his eyes fluttering open.

“Katie?”

“I’m here, Daddy. How are you feeling?”

He smacked his lips. “Dry. Can you get me some water?”

“Right away.” I grabbed the glass of water on the bedside table and held it up, placing the straw to his lips. He took a long sip and then lay back, his eyes closed.

“Feel better?”
