I went in to use the bathroom, brush my teeth, and run a damp comb through my hair. I rubbed my hand over my jaw as I contemplated whether to shave the shadowy start of the beard off my face but decided against it. I was anxious to start the day.

“Remi!” I called loudly from across the hall. I’d closed her door when I left her room so she’d have privacy, but I wanted her to get moving so we could make the most of our day at the amusement park. “Are you up? I’m hungry!” I smiled to myself as I passed her door on the way to the top of the stairs. She’d certainly buy that one.

I could hear her door open as I reached the lower level of the cabin. “I’m ready! I want funnel cake for breakfast!” she called down.

I enjoyed the happiness in her voice and glanced up to watch her make her way to my side. “That sounds awesome. I hope the funnel cake stands are open this early.”

She looked radiant in a pair of cut-off jean shorts that were well frayed on the hem and a cream knit camisole under a sheer blush pink top in a sort of boho style. I wasn’t sure what type of material it was, but I knew it wasn’t lace because the weave was even more fine like netting; yet there was a pattern formed a netting with dots where the threads intersected and a pair of white flip flops.

“What?” Remi asked.

“You look really pretty,” I said simply. I wondered if my adoration shone on my face because I felt it pouring out of me.

“I don’t even have any make-up on,” she protested with a wry, overtly Remi, expression.

“You don’t need it,” I answered honestly.

“I wouldn’t go that far, but I figured sunscreen was more important, and makeup will only melt off due to heat or wash off from the water rides anyway. Do you want some?” Remi unzipped the black leather fanny pack she had strapped around her hips and produced a small tube of the stuff and handed it to me.

I took it from her as I moved toward the door. I stopped to squeeze some of the white lotion out and rubbed it on my arms, the top of my knees and thighs and calves, then handed it back to her. It smelled like coconut. I laughed as she put the tube back. “Nice fanny pack,” I teased. “Why aren’t you wearing it on yourfanny?”

I grabbed my key fob as I opened the door for her.

“You’re right, I should have brought an over the shoulder purse, but I didn’t think it would hold everything. You shouldn’t knock it!” Her gorgeous green eyes danced mischievously. “Are you going to carry your keys, money, or cards? What about those expensive sunglasses when we go on roller coasters? You’ll be thanking me for embarrassing myself with this thing,” she scoffed and breezed by as she walked out of the cabin.

“Oh, is that your story?” I nudged her arm with mine, chuckling. “Okay. Whatever.”

“You know your important crap would end up on the grass under the upside-down loops of the Wild Eagle if I didn’t plan on you being unprepared.” I liked her cheekiness, and it would set the tone for a fun day.

Remi’s mention of what she knew was my favorite ride at the park filled me with a warm giddiness that I thought I’d outgrown years before. She remembered, and hopefully she was thinking about the last time we’d been here; the summer in between high school and college. It was the last time I could remember really being in the bubble where only she and I existed. The boys had paired up and Bliss had been allowed to bring one of her best friends and the parents kept an eye on them, so Remi and I were left to explore the park by ourselves.

“Hmmm,” I mused. “You know, maybe we were mean not bringing the boys and Bliss. We kind of blew them off last time, too.”

“Yeah… No,” she answered matter-of-factly with a short shake of her head.

I smiled as Remi echoed my memories.

Remi burst into tinkling laughter as we climbed into my car to head the short distance to the park.

Remi

I was sitting across from Dylan at one of the picnic tables next to the first funnel cake stand we found, both of us happily munching away on one of the luscious treats. Mine oozing with cherry topping and powdered sugar and Dylan’s with hot apple pie filling and cinnamon whipped cream. I was about a third of the way finished and Dylan by more than half.

“Okay, switch!” He grinned, reaching for my plate, and pushing his at me.

I couldn’t help the giggle that burst from my chest. I was mid mouthful, and I almost spit out my food. Swapping plates was a thing with us. The dimples in his cheeks were adorable. “Hey!” I finally managed. “You’ve eaten more than me!”

“Yep!” he laughed. “Gimme, girl.” Dylan reached for my plate again.

I let him take it while pulling his toward me. He forked up a huge bite of the delicious cherry dessert. “You know, we might have invented a new breakfast business. I mean, it’s sort of like waffles,” he said between chews.

“Only better,” I agreed. “If only I was a business major instead of pre-med,” I mused.

“If only I wasn’t set up to be a soccer phenom,” he teased with a wink.

My head cocked and my brow arched. “As humble as ever.”

He was so gorgeous; he took my breath away. I was thankful for my sunglasses in the mid-morning sun. I’d spent years trying to hide my feelings for Dylan and I’d be damned if I’d let him in on it now. Being with him was so confusing. I silently reminded myself that I had a boyfriend. After years of mooning over my best friend, I’d finally faced the fact that it would never happen between us, but now just being around him for a weekend had me going weak in the knees.
