Especially knowing what she’d been through.

That poor girl.

Although she probably deserved a spanking for driving so far on her own with an unreliable car.

Yep. Definitely deserved a spanking.

But that wasn’t his business. And probably not something he wanted to lead with unless he wanted to sleep with one eye open tonight

His gaze hit on her again. She looked tense and worried.

Because of her fear of storms?

Although she was also on her own in a diner with hardly anyone else here waiting for a stranger to pick her up.

Hack moved slowly toward her. She had a pad in front of her and was sketching something.

He knew he could look intimidating. He was a big guy, with lots of tattoos. Dressed in a leather jacket and jeans, he didn’t look like someone you wanted to mess with.

But really, it was all an act. He had a huge need to take care of other people—especially those smaller and weaker than he was.

All of his friends had found their happily-ever-after while he was on the sidelines.

Always the groomsman . . . never the groom. Not that he was looking for marriage.

Eh, fuck. Who was he kidding? He’d love to find someone to care for, coddle, and protect.

Problem was . . . he was just a bit too much.

At least, that’s what all the women he’d dated in the past had said.

Too protective. Too possessive.

“Hello. Are you Greer?”

Her gaze shot up to him with a gasp as she shied back, her big blue eyes widening.

“Hey. It’s okay. I’m a friend of Sav’s.”

“Sav?”

“Um, you are Greer, right?” Shit. Had he just approached a stranger? No wonder she was giving him a weird look.

“Yes, I’m Greer. I . . . you’re Hack? Aidan’s friend?”

Right. That’s why she was giving him a weird look.

“Sorry. Yeah. We call him Sav. Forgot he had a normal name.”

She managed to give him a small smile. But she was still too pale for his liking. And she was trembling slightly.

Cold?

Or scared?

Well . . . it probably doesn’t help that you’re looming over her.

“May I?” He gestured to the seat across from her.
