“Pinky promise.”

He frowned, straightening as they heard what sounded like a car screech outside.

“Stay here.” He reached behind him for his gun and her heart raced. She froze. Should she go with him?

But he said to stay here.

A good girl would do as she was told.

A door slammed and she gave a small scream.

Oh God. Oh God. Oh God.

“Greer!”

That was Hack’s voice.

“Hack! Be careful, there’s a bad guy ,and Stone’s gonna get himself killed. And it will be all my fault.”

Hack appeared in the dining area. “Whoa, what? What are you talking about?”

“She’s talking about the fact that you just scared the pants off her.” Stone appeared behind Hack, his gun no longer visible. “What’re you doing racing up to the house? Aren’t you meant to be at work?”

“I have some good news. And I managed to leave early, so I came to give you the news in person.” He smiled at her. “He’s been caught, baby.”

“What? Who?”

“The stalker. He’s been found. Not only that, but he’s dead.”

“What the fuck? He’s dead?” Stone snapped.

“Yeah. He was found in a hotel in Bozeman. Looks like he committed suicide.”

“He’s gone?” She felt a bit weird. She guessed she’d always thought of her stalker as her guardian angel. A weird one, sure. But there when she needed him.

Only, he wasn’t. He was that creepy guy she’d been speaking to online. And he’d had a wall of photos of her and other women.

“Bozeman? Why would he be in Bozeman?” Stone asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe he thought it would help him hide?”

“Maybe.” Stone frowned. “Did he leave a message or something?”

“Uh, yeah. A note that said he was sorry for everything he’d done.”

“So what does this mean?” she asked.

“It means that you’re safe, baby girl. You’re safe.” Hack came over and lifted her into his arms, spinning her around.

She giggled, caught by his enthusiasm. Then he put her down and kissed her. Hard and fast and hot.

“And that’s my cue to leave.”

Hack drew back, running his thumb over her cheek before turning to Stone. “Thanks for helping out, man. I know your new job is starting soon. So I’m glad they found this guy before you had to leave.” He walked over and shook the other man’s hand.

“All good. It was a pleasure. Sort of.” Stone gave her a stern look. “You be good, Greer Savage.”

“I will be, Manny Boulder.” She surprised herself and him by hugging him tight. “I actually might kind of just a smidgen miss you.”
