“Edmund’s brother, Joseph, was the one who convinced him to leave, fearing the Devil would figure out he was the rat. So he helped him get out of the country. Edmund still had lofty plans to be a drug kingpin, so he headed to China to build up some contacts with suppliers there. Too risky to go to South America, where the Devil had a lot of contacts.”

“China?” Duke asked. “Shit.”

“Yeah, wasn’t as easy as he thought, though. He was starting from the bottom, and no one trusted him. But eventually, he had the suppliers lined up, and with the Devil gone, he was ready to return for good. And then the Devil’s Kingdom was destroyed and his brother murdered. You were mad, weren’t you, Edmund and wanting revenge. Although I’m not sure if he’s more upset about his brother or the loss of the gang he was going to use to start distributing the drugs.”

“So that’s why he came back here?” Aidan asked. “To find out who killed his brother? And start distributing the drugs?”

“Hmm. He promised his suppliers in China that he’d get results. But without the Devil’s Kingdom, he had to go elsewhere. Like, to the Rakers.”

“Which is why he was at Reaper’s the other night when the Rykers started that brawl,” Duke said. “When he saw Greer.”

“He’s trying to grow the Rykers, make them a big, bad gang, aren’t you, Eddy-boy?” the Fox crooned.

“Fuck,” Aidan said. “He’s the cause of all the unrest in the city?”

“So dumb, Edmund,” the Fox drawled. “You could have kept breathing if you hadn’t come back.”

She flinched as she heard another moan through the speaker.

“Yeah, he made a mistake showing his face at Reaper’s. When he saw Greer, he knew she was the one person who could possibly finger him as the rat. He had someone watching her. They saw her go to Jorgen’s house and Eddy-boy guessed she’d go to the restaurant next. So he went there with plans to kill her.”

“But with the Devil not around, who would even care that he was the rat anymore?” she asked.

“Why don’t you tell her this part, Eddy-boy?” the Fox asked.

“If it got out . . . if you told . . . it might have gotten to the wrong ears.”

“What ears?” the Fox asked.

“The Rykers,” Edmund said.

“Why would that matter?” Duke asked with a frown.

“Because the guy that Eddy here set up to take the fall, the man that Matthew Jorgen and his friends tortured and killed . . . he just happened to be the cousin of the current leader of the Rakers.”

“Holy fuck,” Hack said.

“Yep,” the Fox said gleefully. “What a mess, huh? I thought it was strange that cousins would be in two different gangs, but apparently, they’d had a falling out. However, I still don’t think the current leader would be all that impressed if he found out that Edmund here had set him up to be murdered for something he didn’t do.”

Wow.

“Now, if that’s everything, it’s time to have a bit more fun. Oopsie, dootsie, shall I take a tootsie?” the Fox sang. “Wait. Is a tootsie just a toe or a whole foot? Or is it neither. Is it a Tootsie roll? That would mean a dick, right? I think that’s right.”

Edmund let out a high-pitched cry.

“Well, I don’t want to touch your dick,” the Fox said impatiently. “But it’s part of the rhyme, and I can’t go against the rhyme, so I have to chop your dick off.”

She whimpered.

“Fox!” Duke said sharply.

“What? Oh, you’re all still there.”

“Yes, and you’re scaring Greer,” Duke said.

“And I care because . . .”

“Brody likes Greer,” Duke prompted.
