The call ended and they all breathed a sigh of relief.
“Is it really over?” Greer asked. “He’s gone?”
“The Fox will take care of him,” Duke said. “It’s really done. You’re safe.”
She climbed into Hack’s lap and burst into tears.

“Daddy, I’m home.”
She skipped into the house, looking for Hack. A month had passed since her attack, and it wasn’t often she went out without him. But she’d wanted to go meet Bonnie on her own. He’d been at the clinic when she’d left, but she’d seen his truck outside so she knew he was home.
He’d cut down his hours at the hospital to spend more time with her. But she was going to try to convince him to spend more time at the free clinic.
She’d quit her job. She hadn’t been able to keep up with it after getting hurt. But she was thinking about what she really wanted to do.
Whatever she decided to do, she knew that Hack would support her.
“Hey, baby. You good?” He turned from where he was sitting at the dining table and held out his arms. She dropped the shopping bag she’d been holding and ran to him. He picked her up, settling her on his lap.

Then he drew back and grabbed her chin, tilting her face back.
“So, you drove to meet with Bonnie?”
She’d texted him before leaving and when she got there. Then again, before leaving. So his question was confusing.
Until he held up the glasses she was supposed to wear while driving.
