He used his hip to shut the door to his tuck. “Bury your face into my chest. I’ll carry you into the room.”

So bossy.

She should protest. Should insist that he set her down. What if he slipped and fell? She could land on him and really hurt him.

Instead, like the wimp she was, she wrapped her arms and legs around him and clung to him tightly.

“That’s it, Princess Pumpkin. Good girl.”

“Ick.” Princess Pumpkin? That was terrible.

“You don’t like that one? Hmm, what about Snookums?”

Snookums? “Noooo.”

He started up the stairs. Oh God.

“Gonna drop me.”

“I’m not going to drop you, Snookums. I promise. I’ll never let you fall.”

Shit.

If only that was a promise he could actually keep. If he could be there for her all the time . . . then yeah, maybe she would never fall.

“I have you. Just hold onto me. Now, tell me, what’s wrong with Snookums?”

“It’s t-terrible.”

“Hmm. I don’t know. I think that’s the one I’ll keep. Snuggly Snookums. Sweetie Snookums. Sugar-pie-snookum-bum.”

Oh my God. He was ridiculous.

Which she knew was the point. He was distracting her.

He shifted her weight to one arm. What was he doing?

“Sorry, just getting my key card from my back pocket. Or trying to. Here we are.” He opened the door and stepped inside.

A blast of heat hit her immediately.

Oh, thank goodness. She breathed a sigh of relief.

She was inside. She was safe. She hadn’t completely freaked out.

There was just one small issue . . .

When he went to put her down, she clung to him.

“Um, Greer?”

“Yeah?”

“You haven’t let go.”

“I know. I just . . . I can’t.”

“All right. Well, let’s just sit for a moment.” He turned and sat on the bed. With her tucked into his lap.
