“Scared, precious?”

“No, trying to be respectful.”

He laughed. “You don’t need to do that with me. Just be yourself, no matter what form that takes. I can manage it.”

“But they taught us to be polite.”

He lifted her and settled her across his lap. “That is because we are big, angry, horny bastards. Claws and teeth and wings. Planets that worship every step we take. The shock from going from silence to the stations is difficult. Learning how to treat a new species is difficult, and knowing that we can pretty much crush anyone in our path makes us move carefully. Anger at that moment could cause us to destroy something small and soft. Manners smooth that gap.”

She felt his hands circle her thighs and spread them wider. The dresses were more of a robe, and soon, he was inside her, and she had her hands braced on his chest.

He kissed her softly. “Only a few more encounters with you and days for you to recover, and I will be able to relax a little. I am very worried about injuring you.”

She felt widened and stretched, but she still wasn’t all the way on him. She swallowed. “How was I slick enough for you to even get in?”

He chuckled and leaned forward to whisper in her ear. “You want me.”

She blushed and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Maybe a little. Don’t go too deep.”

He laughed and turned his head to kiss her. “Promise.”

Nebel started moving her over him, and they spent several hours at his desk. He didn’t break his promise once. He came close, but he kept his word.

Chapter Nine

Nova got up, identified that Heboren wasn’t with her, and went to take a shower. The water smelled like citrus. There was a drying vent in the floor, and the blast lightly lifted her before she stepped off with her hair floofed around her. She clawed it out of the way before searching the vanity for a brush.

When her hair was under control, she braided it and tied the base of the braid with strands that she pulled out. The brush had been clean, so it seemed her daily loss of hair was over. The Hmrain biological maintenance was firmly underway.

She put on her shoes and pulled on a dress that was a sleeveless sheath slit up to her thighs. There was no com centre she could use, so she hauled open one of the doors and looked both ways to see if anyone was there. The hall was empty.

She knew what was on the upper level and walked until she found more stairs. Nova walked down the steps with her head high and shoulders back. She heard people bustling and speaking softly. When she heard Heboren’s voice, she sighed in relief.

She continued down to the floor, and the voices grew silent. Heboren was sitting at a huge oval desk, there were smaller desks around the space, and Hekora got to her feet. “Oh, lady, you are awake.”

“Yes, Hekora. I was hungry, so I went in search of food.”

The woman flinched.

Heboren sighed. “Hekora, you said you had brought up a tray for her so she could eat when she woke. My consort is peckish after I wear her out.”

“Overseer, I didn’t think she would wake this soon and didn’t want to waste the food.”

Nova waved her hand in the air. “Whatever. Where can I find food?”

Hekora bowed, her claws appearing and disappearing. “I will be back shortly, lady.”

“No. Seriously. I can get my own food. I can cook it if necessary, though I often skip that.”

Hekora paused. “That isn’t necessary. I will return in a moment.”

Heboren beckoned, and Nova walked over to him. She curtsied from the other side of the desk.

He chuckled. “Over here, Nova.”

She wrinkled her nose. “I think here is safer.”

His wing swept out and pulled her around the desk until she was next to him. He reached out and pulled her close. He kissed her forehead and pulled her onto his lap. “Did you sleep well?”
