“Ma’am, no disrespect, but I don’t know you and—”

“Lawe!”

“What?”

Without responding, my face stiffened. He quickly got my drift, straightening his posture and piping down almost instantly.

“All I’m saying is, you the only one I’m trying to hear from.”

“Aeir was in a car accident the night Anna was murdered, all the way in Channing. She’d been pronounced dead. They’d been working on her for hours and gave up. Around the same time Anna was murdered, Aeir was given another chance at life. Somehow, someway, we’ve been led to believe that there was a—”

“Transferring of souls. Reincarnation.” Milo’s grogginess startled us all.

“Yes. That,” I added. “She didn’t wake up until two years later, which was about six weeks or so ago. Her heart led her here, it seems. And, since, we’ve been trying to figure all of this shit out. I didn’t believe any of it at first, fought hard not to believe it, but there’s so much evidence supporting it.”

“Reincarnation?” Lawe mumbled.

“The religious or philosophical belief that the soul or spirit, after biological death, begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual, depending on the moral quality of the previous life's actions.”

“I know what it is, nigga. I’m not fucking slow. And, why do you know the definition word for word?”

“I’m a psychiatrist, Lawe. I see patients who feel as if they’ve experienced this on some level and some that actually have. Maybe you are a bit slow.”

“Fuck you!”

“Aeir,” Milo greeted, stepping forward and opening his arms. “Milo.”

“I remember.” Her smile was heart-stopping. “The wal—”

“—king encyclopedia,” we said in unison.

“Ah. Yes. You do remember,” Milo sneered.

“Yes.”

“Then why the hell you don’t remember me?” Lawe’s selfishness was showing, causing us all to snicker.

“I mean, I did. You obviously didn’t want to be remembered or touched. In fact, you didn’t want me talking.” She reminded him of his outbursts.

“Well, I’m listening now.”

“I’ve lost interest,” she informed him, bursting his bubble.

“Yeah. Whatever she’s saying happened, definitely happened,” Milo sniggered, pointing between Lawe and Aeir. “Welcome to the family.”

Lawe and Anna’s bickering was always comical. Hearing him and Aeir go back and forth reminded me of their unnecessary battles.

“That’s wild,” he continued. “A love so monumental, so wondrous that not even death could dismantle it.”

Everyone stood around in silence, digesting his words.

“So, can I have some of this food or what?”

“Have you washed your hands?” Aeir asked.

“You know what… never mind. Y’all got some voodoo type of shit going on in this bitch, anyway. I’m not trying to swallow whatever potion y’all done cooked up. I’m going home to have Kleu whip me up something. Come on, Albert!”

“Albert?” Milo froze, eyes squinting as he tried to solve the mystery Lawe had just left him with.
